reverse

Hello all
My son has a yard kart that he wants me to add reverse to. I have heard of people adding a car starter motor to karts for reverse. My question is does anyone know how to do this. If I just add it with a chain and sprocket it would be turning in reverse while the kart is going forward. I wouldnt think this would be good for the starter. Im sure there has to be another way to hook it up and maybe move a linkage or something to engage it and then turn it on. Any help would be appreciated.

From what I have seen they use the starter and ring gear from a car then the starter is only turning when engaged, mounting the ring gear on a smaller sraight axle kart may be a bit of a challenge though
