I'm building a human powered go cart (pedal power) and wanted a reverse. I found these two options:

The first and what seems to be the most popular way:
"COMET GEARBOX":
http://www.mfgsupply.com/m/c/218390A.html

GY6 Reverse Gearbox:
http://www.buggydepot.com/buggy-tech-center/read/how-it-works-writeups/5/7/how-it-works-gy6-reverse-gearbox.html

Here are my concerns:

Comet:
I read on another posting they are out of business (?) so I dont even know if this is an option. It also looks to be fairly large (possibly heavy) and may not be very efficient for pedal power, or at least not as efficient as the GY6 type.

GY6:
This is a very small, highly efficient "in-line" forward-reverse ONLY gear box. It's highly efficient because in FORWARD the entire unit spins, only in REVERSE do you have to overpower the friction of planetary gears. It sounds great for what I want to do but I CANT FIND THE THING!
(at least not the one pictured) haha.

I searched for a while on google and I found these:

ATV Reverse Gearbox (for 150cc GY6 Motors) from ScooterParts4Less
http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.scooterparts4less.net/web_gas/ATV_150cc_reverseGear_logo.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.scooterparts4less.net/web_gas/ATV_150cc_reverseGear.htm&usg=__TKrFNqz_mDUlc4TIXb6Uom1_hjY=&h=540&w=432&sz=45&hl=en&start=4&um=1&itbs=1&tbnid=r8HrUFezOYEroM:&tbnh=132&tbnw=106&prev=/images%3Fq%3D150cc%2Breverse%2Bgearbox%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26rls%3Dcom.microsoft:en-us%26tbs%3Disch:1
*this one claims to be a reverse box for GY6 motors but doesn't look at all like the one shown in the above link.

Gear Box for 150cc Go Karts from motorpartsmax
http://www.motopartsmax.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=5574&utm_source=froogle&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=motoparts_all.1
*This one is a complete KIT but I can't tell if it works in the same manor, it seems to be lever operated instead of cable operated though! weird.

Roketa GK-01 from GoKartsUSA
http://gokartsusa.com/roketagk-01reversegearbox.aspx
*This one looks similar but the web page gives NO info on how it works, it doesn't seem to include the linkage, and the picture is of a USED one... which is never a good sign.

So, If you are wondering what my questions are:

1. Which of the two styles should I get (im leaning towards the GY6 if I can find one) ?
2. Where can I find one of those GY6 Reverse Boxes? *preferably NEW
3. Has anyone here had any experience with either of these types of reverse boxes?

THANK YOU.

yea i agree...just have a setup so you can pedal backwards. Maybe you could figure out some kind of locking hub so that the freewheel sprockets dont freewheel.

i would go with the mfg one (The first one) it looks better designed and stronger. Not many people on here have put a reverse on their kart due to the price mainly so you may not get alot of replies

Yeah, thats a good idea, but I dont think I will be able to pull that one off... mainly because I am planning on using the Nuvinci CVT hub as a transmission and that thing freewheels in one direction.

I just found a few of the second type for sale... it seems they are about 100 bucks less, leaving them with a 150 dollar price tag, were as the first is a 250 dollar tag.
