My old go kart is about 20 years old. I've been having lots of carb problems lately and one of the reasons is most likely the amount of rust in the gas tank. I shined a light in there and it was just filled with rust. So I need to replace it but they are shockingly expensive. And who wants a metal one anyway. Is there some kind of generic plastic tank you can buy and somehow attach it to the motor?

I mean just about any fuel tank will work. Just a matter of how you want to mount it. If you mount it up, should be fine. Mount if below the carb bowl, you'll need a fuel pump. Plastic or aluminum would work just fine.

One of the ones I've done was fill a tank with water/rocks and mow the lawn with it strapped to the wheel. Works quite well lmao. Probably cheapest option.

Cool a modified 285 Dingo! Great kart!
If you're referring to the hitch, I used to use that a lot 20ish years ago but i have since removed it. I live in a state with almost no ORV legal trails so pretty much this thing is just a toy to screw around the streets during a blizzard with now. BUT that said, I might weld on a 1.25" receiver so I can pop a ball mount on there if I want to.

So what causes rust in a fuel tank? Is it just a natural thing that will happen with every metal tank? Or does it only happen when water gets in there? Like maybe I gassed up a few too many times while it was snowing out and over time the water built up? If that's the case, is it best to run the machine until it fully runs out of fuel once in a while, and in theory will also suck up all the water and get it out of the tank and ultimately out the tail pipe?

It spend any time sitting? Gas with ethanol in it will attract water. Water goes to bottom.... More often than not the reason I get rusted tanks is because whatever it was would've been sitting for a decent period of time.

Pretty much all it does is sit. It's more of an odd shaped table than vehicle. Still I'd like to have it run though.

It will always get a little water in it from condensation. Gas caps are vented to allow the fuel to flow at constant atmospheric pressure, you can't seal that off. Good idea to run the carb dry once in a while, but the tank would be happier if you just unbolted it and dumped it all out, flushed it with a little clean gas. Recycle everything you dump, save the planet, etc.
