removing Flywheel From an Tecumseh HS50

hey guys, well, i got my Tecumseh HS50 all tore down but, i need to remove the flywheel. The Problem is, i have no way of applying torque to the flywheel nut without the crank turning over. The motor is stripped down to just the block,crank, and flywheel. Any ideas? BTW the flywheel has plastic fins so a wrench in between the fins is pointless and i tried vise grips on the PTO shaft but it just slips. Thanks

impact gun, or strapwrench, an impact gun will do it even though the engine is broke down just makesure its on the highst setting.

Put the rod and piston back on half-assedly, it doesn't need to even be tight or have rings. Stick some rope in the cylinder, and put the head back on. Voila, it doesn't turn, now take off the flywheel.

use an impact, not shure if it will work without the piston and head on because compression helps slow the crank

Only impact i have is a 19v craftsman cordless. I don't think it has near enough compression. I really don't want o reinstall the piston and rod, but i guess i have to. =(

haha im not very friendly whith any of my neighbors, i was robbed by them recently, and everyone on the block too sides, so neighbors are out of the question lol.

How about set the engine on your work bench right next to your bench vice with some shop towels in-between.

Then wrap a ratcheting tie-down strap around the flywheel (once or twice if necessary) with its hooks attached to the vice.

And then crank that tie-down as tight as necessary to keep the flywheel from turning.

Be careful using an impact on Tecumseh crank nuts. I broke the crank snub right off on an H100 that way once.

well like i said, I'm really not able to get an impact. I think i will reinstall the piston and rod and put a rag or 2 in the cylinder, reinstall the head and crank the nut off with a breaker bar and socket, its rusted on very well.

Use a large pipe wrench to hold starter cup and use breaker bar and socket to remove nut.
I use this method when all else fails.
No need to re-assemble internals.
Replace sump cover to properly support crankshaft before attempting to remove flywheel.

hmm i will have to see if i have an old pipe wrench but i doubt it. I think i will just partially reassemble the engine and use rags in the cylinder and use a breaker bar, should only take me 10 minutes.

well i replaced the piston and rod and put a rag in the cylinder, installed the head with 2 bolts- TOOK under 4 minutes and then i removed the flywheel nut with a ratchet and socket. Thanks Guys! BTW should i rebuild this engine, or part it out? what will i get the most profit from? thanks!
