Hello,

I have a briggs 5.5 HP that I need to pull the drive pulley off of. The pulley is secured with a square shaft key and looks like it has been on there for quite some time. So here is my question...how do I remove the key without damaging the inner diameter of the drive pulley? And should the pulley simply slide off the shaft once the key is removed?

Thanks!

Yes. you just want to get it to move slightly. With a 8hp Manco I used to have I had to make a flat plate type puller to get that one off though way too many trips through the mud pit. Patience is key here you do not want to go pounding or prying on anything and risk distorting anything.

Drive unit? Drive unit has a built in key that is part of the non moveable sheave. Driven units have the key.

This is what I did once. After removing all but the stationary sheave, I screwed the 5/16" fine thread bolt back into the shaft, then held onto just the stationary sheave, putting all the weight of the engine on the shaft w/sheave and facing up. I hit the bolt head a few times and it came off. Not the smartest or best way to do it, but it worked. Usually PB blaster will work.
