Anybody ever buy refurbished laptops?
I threw my old laptop and now it is dead.

Was looking at a refurbished 14” EliteBook.

i5 CPU
8440P
2.4GHz
4GB RAM
250 GB HDD
DVDRW
1 year warranty

$200 shipped.

Don’t care to spend much more than $200.
Any better options for around the price?
Just for browsing (4 or 5 tabs) and watching Netflix and stuff.
I keep it plugged in and rarely move it, so battery life isn’t a concern.
NewEgg gets its refurbished products from manufacturers (maybe third party refurbishers?) I believe.

specs look promising..
HDD is too small to make sense nowadays. (but that's easy to replace)
display is the main culprit though..
14" is an odd size and they'll rarely ever replace it even if the backlight is burned out or you have "above average" dead pixels.
15.4" displays are cheaper (more common size) and thus get replaced much quicker (being more cost efficient)

IDK.. if you cannot look at it in person it's hard to make a qualified statement about it's condition.
personally I don't like HP at all but that's just me ;)

PS
HP EliteBook 8470p 14" Laptop/Notebook 2.90GHz Core i5 4GB 320GB HDD Windows 10
on ebay (refurbished) for 135
just to give you an idea about pricerange ;)

My last laptop was used more like a tower. Hooked up to a 32” TV for a monitor. Not actually concerned with display, just so long as it functions so I can start it up. My laptop is like my remote control.

Don't care for refurbished and will not buy. Slammed the lid down (it was worth it) on my HP Pavillion laptop and it died :D....... Bought a new emachines E528 Acer and I love it!!!!!!!! And remember, ALWAYS move your photos and info onto an exterior back up drive in case of such unfortunate accidents :D

I use my smartphone like that. It's a Samsung. I have an HDMI adapter, works with my TV and projector.

Go KODI.

The adapter to make that possible for an iPhone is like $60 and you still need the HDMI cable. I used that for a while until the adapter crapped out.

Sucked not being able to use phone and watch TV at same time.

For a while I used cellular data for all my video streaming. Via HDMI adapter to my TV. Even tried Bling TV for a bit. Now I have WiFi access and a Comcast TV Go Log In, Netflix Log In, and digital antenna.

There's a reason HP is nicknamed Horrible Product. I don't trust Refurbs anymore than used, far as electronics go. I've had a Dell laptop and several Asus. A cheap Asus is lightyears better than anything HP puts out.

I bought a refurbished acer laptop as my first computer about 5 years ago, and it still works.

OTOH i bought a new asus gaming laptop (~800) a little over a year ago and the motherboard failed, but I had extended warranty with micro center. They couldn't source the parts for less than the original purchase price so they gave me a full refund to buy a new one.

Now I have a samsung laptop (notebook 9 pro) cost about 1100, working great so far. Nicest display I've ever seen on a laptop. 4k is super sharp.

I don't really have any brand loyalties, I mostly bought based off of specs per dollar and price range. I think used and refurbished are fine. If a refurb comes with a warranty for a year I think that's long enough. If something fails after then, it's old enough that you could be looking for a new one.

If you're going to be using it like a tower, why not get a tower? You can get better specs for the same money and parts are easily upgraded or replaced.

I like having the option of using it like a true laptop. Even if only doing so 5% of the time.
As far as brand loyalty. I don’t know enough.

All components made in Taiwan?

Now looking at a Dell Latitude E6420
Shipped for under $300

2nd Gen i5 2.5 GHz CPU
14” Display
8GB RAM
256 GB SSD
DVD+/- RW Optical Drive
HDMI output

1 year parts and labor warranty.

Everything I want but a touch screen (and an xtra 500 GB HHD).
Lots of these are sold with Windows 7, but I think I can upgrade to 10 for free til the end of the year.
That shouldn’t be a problem right? How long will 7 be supported?

Do we like Dell better than HP?
8GB RAM over 4?
SSD over HHD?
Worth the extra $100 right?

Seems like a decent machine for the price.
