red gas can for a gas tank???

me and my brother were talking the other day and i had a brilliant idea(i think).What is i took my 2.5 gallon regullar red gas can ,filled it will a 1:32 gas oil mix,mounted it too the luggage rack close to the engine and drilled to holes for intake and return?does anyone see anyproblem with this?(besides having a huge bomb sitting behind me and being constantly scared of crashing)i think ill have like milliage in the 400's with 2.5 gallons,i might have to re-fuel like every 2 years!

my neighbor and i did this on his race kart. you need to totally seal the top except for the vent port, but make sure to have the cover. drill a hole closest to the bottom as you can and find a way to get the bolt down and and screw in a pulse fitting, then fuel line is ran to a fuel pump. you could go gravity with it but im not sure how it would work.

the gas cap that i have on the original tank will fit on the gas can and im going to use a gravity system (fuel filter-primer bulb-carb-return line into tank) since thats what is already on there.and the bottom of the tank is compleatly flat,does that matter?and do i need to bolt it down or can i just strap it down?Also,is a cop going to have a problem with me doing this?

Probably. It is not exactly the safest thing around. I would also recommend that you don't keep it full, because unless you are going to be riding it every day, the gas will start going bad before it can all be used.

Depends on the policeman...around here it'd be no big deal.

You can make a fuel tank out of lots of different things - beer kegs, fire extinguishers, etc.

As long as it's not leaking or moving around (lots of ways to strap it down solid), I don't see how it'd be any less safe than the plastic fuel tanks on lots of small engines, it's the same material for the same purpose.

The flat bottom only means you might "run out" of gas before the tank is completely empty, but you've got a lot of capacity there, so unless you like to run it way low I wouldn't worry about it - I hate letting fuel tanks get below 1/4...

Good call on not letting the gas sit for extended times, todays fuel doesn't seem to last more than a month before causing problems - which is why I add Stabil to all of my gas cans when I fill them, unless I *know* I'm going to use it within a day or so.

Just an idea, but what if you add 2 ports for gas line and make a reserve?

yeah,that'll be the last thing he yells at me for.just yesterday i had a cop stop at my house walk up to me and started asking me questions about it!like "wheres the muffler, is the moped registered?" so i jsut told him to get off private property this m.a.b is for off road use and he semmed to belive that

a tap that alows fuel to flow from the reserve to the main

or a T peice that joins both tanks to the fuel line with two taps that can issolate both tanks

turn one on and use it up
turn it off and turn the other on

wow that was quick. and i just had a break thru,what if i drilled a hole in the top and ran a line from the red can to the stock gas tank?.that would be so much simpler!i wouldnt even have to mess with re-runing everthing to the primer buttton and the carb!anyone see anything wrong with this idea?
