Is there anyway to convert a newer recoil starter to an older square recoil starter?

Yes and no......If it's what I think....your original flywheel has a square pegged stump sticking up that has a roller bearing activated centrifugal locking mechanism in it's base.....and that's where the engage/disengage takes place.....and the starter pulley just has a square hole it goes into.....

The newer ones have kinda a cam operated set of ears that protrude when you pull the rope ....and are part of the starter pulley and shroud.......

I'm not 100% sure.....(been awhile) .....but I think you can just take off the square drive.....and bolt one of those new style cups....(that the ears engage into) onto the flywheel under the nut.......

You're absolutely right, though I can't seem to remove that piece.

It's threaded on take something like a long punch or something, place it on one of the offset places and give it a good solid tap with a hammer, might take a couple hits then it should un-screw , just remember when looking at that side of the engine it will loosen to the left. it tightens to the right and loosen to the left.

So I got the starter clutch off, and tried to put the new cup and starter on but it wouldn't thread right. I just need to order a new rewind starter.

Wouldn't work anyway, if you look at the end of the crank the old style has a longer snout, where it screws on the end the ( square style) , the newer style has a shorter snout on it , so long story short when you remove the older parts and exposes the end of the crank/threads which you should be able to put the cup on no problem, the problem is when you go to put the new style recoil cover on it will hit the end of the crank snd stop it from reaching the cup and won't bolt down to the engine. IIRC anyway. So unless you want to change out the crank yes get a new older style recoil assembly. JMO
