Hi,
I know that this topic has come up numerous times, but is there a way to prevent spam from new members? Like a short bio that the mods have to check to authorize new members.

Oh and also, for me the forum is 2 or 3 minutes in the future. Is it the same for everyone else? (tbh its not a big deal, just thought that I would mention it)

We have debated making people jump through hoops to either sign up in the first place, or to gain posting permission. Obviously, this has not happened as of yet.

It is my own personal opinion (and not necessarily those of DIYGK, blah blah, blah, legal mumbo-jumbo) that having prospective members write an "about me" or such similar effort in order to gain posting permission is well worth the effort. To me, it shows that you're serious about joining up and sharing the forum. Not only do I belive it will take a big bite outta the spam situation, I think it has the potential to shut the door on "trolling", "drive-by's" and undesirables.

I used to (still technically do) belong to a scale model building forum that had exactly that. Upon sign up, you had to write a bio and await approval. If you did not write it in a timely fashion, or it was blatant crap, you simply got axed. That's it, period. I have no problem with this. Other folks, however, feel that it would deter new members.

So, as it stands, we're doing what we can to nuke the spam when it comes to our attention. So, just a reminder folks-

1)Hit the "Report Post" button if you see spam. This action automatically emails all of us, and we'll find it faster.

2)Please do not post a reply to, or quote the spam post. That's just more deletion work for us.

Thanks for your patience and contributions to the forum, folks! Cheers- Chris

vb has many spam deterrents. If the admin sets the board up correctly, there will be minimal to no spam. The way that I have discovered is most effective, is set up both captcha and ask a question and answer for new registrations.
IE, How many wheels do a Go Kart Have?
The name of this site you are posting on?
and on and on. They do not have to be hard questions but they do have to be answered.
Most spammers want to be able to post without any kind of sign ups, captchas, question answer,,, and so on...
Also require admin or moderation on the users FIRST post.
OR you can require admin authorization before anyone can post.
Then check the IP of the person signing up. If its china or russia more than likely it is spam. If you have members on here from china that participate actively from china or Russia, then my apologies. There are ways. Make me an co-admin for one and I GUARANTEE it will stop.
Also, just a suggestion. I have been using Xenforo for awhile apposed to Vbulliten.
I have NOT had one spammer yet, I do not have to validate ANY new signups...
to see what xenforo looks and feels like feel free to test my site
