Haha, Blazkowiez does chime in his .2 cents on most every thread... BECAUSE he knows what he is talking about, and is very much respected for it! He has helped me and many others on this forum too many times to count. If you want help you certainly are barking up the wrong tree. You can't just come into these Forums and say things like that and expect help..... dick

As an update:

I've removed all the pressure plate chains and sprockets. Took out the axle, flipped the drive sprocket around (to give more room for new motor) and am getting ready to mount the new motor. I'll have to cut the existing motor mount and brace it with some flat metal stock.

I'll update again once I get motor mounted.

Sounds like progress! My snow blower uses that crappy friction drive. Pics would be great!

Are you using a standard Azusa mount plate or building your own?

We've done this very same conversion at the shop using a 5.5hp Honda and a gear reduction unit, turned out great.

I think i'll just use some flat metal stock we have laying around here.

How will I tell if i will need a gear reduction unit? and if you have time, could you shoot me a link of one so i can see what it is?

The gear reduction unit I was speaking of at first was a built in wet bath clutch that Honda makes as an expensive option for their motors, they are very popular at kart tracks due to their long life.

I can not find a link directly. The reason we wanted to use this engine was the fact that the kart is designed for smaller children, you have a small drive sprocket and a fixed tooth count on the clutch (you can go bigger but not smaller like would be necessary to slow the kart). You can replicate this with any given jack-shaft just to change the ratio.

ok, finally after 2 months i got my brother over to help me mount the motor. it isn't pretty and there is definately some redneck ingenuity involved, but it gets the job done.

now i have a problem, when i start the motor the drive sprocket runs constantly, if i put on the brakes the motor compensates by revving higher (thinking its going to die i guess). it seems that the clutch isn't working or did i find a wrong type of motor?

here is the clutch i bought: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/MINI...pt=Go_Karts&hash=item588887433b#ht_1075wt_939

Bump...

It seems like the clutch is locked up. when the kart has no weight on it the wheels turn constantly. if you add some weight the wheels will keep turning but more labored and after about 30 secs the clutch starts smoking something fierce. at first i thought the clutch was turning on the shaft, but thats not the case. i think something is wrong with the clutch.

does anyone have a way to diagnose the clutch?

either your engine idle speed is too high, clutch needs to be lubed, or the springs need to be tighned. is this the first time you used the clutch, or have you used it alot, and this is a new problem?

Its a brand new clutch I bought off ebay, so its the first time I used it.
Can I tell by looking at it if it needs springs tightened or lubed?

you need to take off the c-clip on the end of the clutch and then you can pull the bell off an see whats going on inside. the clutch should spin freely when the motor is off or idling
