Hi All,

First post, hoping for some good wisdom and advice from the board.

I have a Manco XTK706B that we bought used about 7 yrs ago when my daughters were of age to ride it. They got about 3 good years out of it, and then became teenagers and lost interest in all things outdoors. For the last 4 years it sat uncovered in the back of my yard.

My son is turning 10 in December and asked if we could fix it up and get it running together as part of his birthday present. I'm all in on any project that gets Dad/Son time. I've done some searching on the board before creating this post, but could use some straight guidance on some questions.

1. The engine hasn't been started in 4 years, the tank was low and nasty gas varnished the crap out of the carburetor. I'm thinking it is worth the $125 to source a 6.5hp predator engine and make that whole part of the job easy.
Question(s): Will the Predator engine bolt right up to the mounting bracket of the old Techumesh unit and will it line up where it should for the drive output? Any issues with the kill switches, etc?
Is the 6.5hp Predator the best bet for this kart? I'm never opposed to more power, but the cart used to run quick enough for the kids on the old engine. Are the Harbor Freight engines the best bang for the buck? Anything else I should consider?

2. The Kart has a 30 series Comet torque converter. I looked at Ebay for replacement units and a knock off kit can be had for about $75. I noted that the 20 and 30 series both are rated for 3-8hp units, and the 30 series is asymmetric vs the 20 series symmetric design. I also saw on a search that the only difference between the two was the inner sheave.
Question(s): Are the knock off units good enough for tooling around with the kid? What's the benefit to the 30 series vs 20 series? Since I have a 30 series set up now should I stick with that design?

3. Everything else on the kart is in good shape (except the front tires that need replacing) and just needs a thorough cleaning, lubing, tightening, etc. I read through this thread and will follow a lot of the same steps: http://www.diygokarts.com/vb/showthread.php?t=19113
Question(s): Is there anything that I should take care of that might not be obvious? Where are the best websites for parts? Are there any mods that you'd recommend while I have it apart? From a safety standpoint, should I stick with the old 3 point seatbelts or go a different route?

Thanks guys. I appreciate any help I can get.

1) predator engine shaft is a little shorter, and it will work. Use washers as spacers (you may need to just use fewer washers as spacers. You may need to relocate the jackshaft sprocket to the opposite side of the jackshaft. Not a big deal.

2) buy the knock off, and dont use the backplate. Use the existing mount. You can even use the new jackshaft sprocket. The spacing has been the same for me (measure center of engine shaft to center of jackshaft just to be sure). 30 series is better than 20 series as it has "overdirve" (20 series does not have the same range between low and high - that means less speed and or less torque with 20 series)

3) bearings should be replaced. They are cheap. GoPowerSports sells a lot of manco parts, as they bought up a lot of the stock out there.

Luckily, most of the parts that need replacing are not manco specific (bearings, tires, etc)

Have fun!

on the 706 if u can spring the money and the time i would add a predator 420 on there. I have had 2 of the 706 which had the 6hp engine and a 710 that had a 10hp. The 10hp felt so much better on the kart. With the weight of the kart plus 200lbs the 6.5 predator kinda struggles

Thanks Guys.

I ordered this Predator this morning from HF. On their frontpage is an online coupon for $20 off, so it was $99 + 6 shipping. Not bad at all:

Then I ordered this torque convertor:

I'll probably order another disk brake actuator after I tear that out this weekend.

I'll post some pics as I go.
