Rear brake question mb 165

So as I assemble the bike I put the rear tire on and started to put the break cable on..can't seem to be able to adjust the cable tight enough..the nut bottoms out

Will a worn out loose cable cause this? Just wanted to be sure they stretch that much or if I'm missing a trick or something

Seems pretty simple and straight forward though
It's a drum and the breaks themselves looks really good..spring in the drum and pads looks in great shape

Could you post a pic of the bike in question?
Kinda helps us what were looking at.

Could be missing a lot of stuff like.

Being connected to brake handle.
Cable in proper position on handle
Handle adjustment too loose
Could be not sitting on the tab that holds it in place on the frame near the rear wheel
The spring around the cable at rear wheel could be missing
The brake lever on the actual brake assembly on the rear wheel could be off/missing spring
The bracket that connects from the brake assembly to the frame could be missing
Or you could be missing the actual brake pads

I have 3 and none of them ever had this issue.

Yep I sure did mean brake..oops

All parts, springs and brackets are there from what I can tell..

The drums are in great shape and function correctly when off..I can see the as the lever is pulled and it turns a flat end to the rounded side opening the pads that in turn press in the drum

I did have to rotate the spring though because the spring seemed to be pulling the break actuator making them stay locked and when the lever was pulled to apply the breaks it actually took them off instead of applying them..so it seemed like something was backwards but all the brackets line up..I'm not getting how they could be backwards so I moved the spring to the other side of the bracket and the breaks work properly now but the cable is way to long now

I honestly can't say if they worked before I tore it apart sadly because I didn't test them

Thanks again for the hand holding through my first build ..as you can see in the background I have a few more toys waiting their turn

Can you move the arm on the splined shaft a bit (about a notch or two), and back off the nut that adjusts the cable. That way it will have enough travel to be fully engaged and be disengaged when released.

The only way I see if I fully understand the problem right.

Good idea Mckutzy. If it were me I would move the brake arn Like Mckutzy stated and install a spacer between the spring and the brake arm or between the spring and the cable attacthment.

ok so if i am understanding you want me to pull the lever arm off the break where the cable attaches and move it a few notches to the forward? i was thinking as well..just cant figure out how it got so out of adjustment..

i will do this and report back

Funny you should use those words.....it's "The Poboy Fund"......but being that funds are at an all time low this year......we've instituted a "salvation force".....

A couple of guys ...."Guido and Knuckles"....follow "Salvation Army" bell ringers to their cars at quitting time....and persuade them to contribute...

So .....give early and give often....the bell ringers butt you save may be your own......
