Rear Axle Issues

I’m new to the karting world and bought a used one on the cheap. While looking at the rear axle I noticed three different diameters...this is only on the right side. What would be the purpose?

Its a stepped axle, it might have been that way as to fit a new wheel the PO had bought.

I just thought it was strange that only side of the axle was like that.

This is the other side of rear axle.

Might be one size for the wheel hub, another for the sprocket hub, another for the bearing to ride on.…..seems most likely....Joe

Since nobody else has said it yet, it could be that the wheel was spinning on the axle and that's just worn.

Might be.....wouldn't be the first time. I just noticed what looked like the key laying there, which should have eliminated hub spin......Joe

I cleaned the axle off with mineral spirits and it seems for some reason it was machined to a smaller diameter or it could have been wheel spin....it had a key way about half the size it needed. Thanks guys!!!!
