A friend gave me a mini quad 49cc 2 stroke for doing some plumbing work on his house. He said it does run. After looking it over a bit I pulled the cord. WOW It was really hard. I'll try to explain it, it was a HARD JOLT JOLT JOLT on my hand. After a few tries and a painful hand I gave up.
So I pulled the plug cleaned it up. With the plug out I pulled the cord and it pulled so easy a 2 year old could have pull it. Put the plug back in. Pulling the cord again I got the same thing.

A real HARD JOLT JOLT JOLT painfully hard jolt.

After a little starting fluid it did start. Still when I pull the cord it's like it has way to much compression. I still get that hard kicking jolt, it even brock the plastic pull handle in my hand.
Is there a way to fix this or is this what it is? If any thing can be done where do I start? I don't know much about 2 strokes. Thanks to anyone who can help me whit this one.

Ok I'll have to look it over to see if I can find something, like I said I don't know much about 2 strokes. Maybe by then some more info will come my way.

First never use starting fluid on a 2 cycle. Was the plug wet? The carb. could be leaking fuel into the cylinder , causing it to hydraulic. I have never seen a decomp. on a weed eater. And lastly.. :useless:

Each time I checked the plug was wet. The pet cock that is mounted right onto the top of the carborator does leak or some where on carb I notice gas dripping. I don't know but would a new carb be a good starting point? Or should I try to fix the leak?

I got a new phone for birthday I need to learn to post picks with it. Any thing I can do that you know of, with the little information that I have given? Thanks

I thought from the start I would need a new carb. They are cheap but will have to wait till xmas and use xmas money for this project. Until then I will try to rebuild it. I really don't know much other then cleaning up the carb. What else would I do to rebuild it. If all else fails I will get a new one. Although I really would like to learn how to work on and rebuild the one I have. If anything I will have gained some learning experience hopefully.

We're talking about a 49cc pocket bike engine, correct? If so, I have never seen one of those that didn't have a leaky petcock...

I'm going to ignore all the potential jokes I can make about leaking pet cocks.

But his plug is wet so the float is stuck.. Or the needles diaphragm is cracked and he is getting mass gas into the cylinder.

Posting pics is easy.. Go to advanced posting .. Click on the 📎. Then another window upens to select pics. If I figured it out you can to.

Wise choice; thank you ;)

I won't disagree with that, although, I was merely pointing out that a leaky petcock is almost inherent with those engines...

With the carb. off the motor and the plug dry I also used air to dry plug hole. Pulling the cord was really easy. With the carb still off the motor I put the dry plug back. Pulling the cord was still very hard to do. In the past I had a 47cc and 49cc pocket bikes though they were never this hard to pull. I believe the person who gave this mini quad, took the pull cord cover off to replace the cord. Is it possible there could be something wrong or broken in this area? thanks for any help or suggestions.

So plug out it spins easily,
Plug in its hard to turn over?

Hoy long is the threaded part on the plug? Could it possibly be too long and hitting the piston? What happens if you half way screw the plug in. Just to get a few threads to seal.

That's something I didn't try. I'll have to try the plug partly threaded in. If this helps to pull the cord with less trouble I'll pull the plug out off the weed eater with hopes that it will work. Good idea? Bad idea?

If it ran ok once started, or even started for that matter, I highly doubt the plug has anything to do with your hard to pull problem.
