You sort of need a welder to do engine mounts if you dont want to drill holes in the frame (which still wont be nearly as good as welding).

It's easy to learn how to weld, and arc welders are cheap.

Dont know how well it will work for a engine mount, but I have temp bolted things to my frames (karts, bikes, motorcycles) with these...

Or the super cheap way to get them welded would be to take the kart and mount to a muffler shop and ask one of the guys to zap it on durring his break.. Prolly do it for $10 depending on how you want it done.. Thats how I had kickass bike paint jobs in elementry school, I would get whatever color Macco was painting that day, mask off my graphics take it back and they shoot another coat, lol.. good luck to ya

A welder is one of the best tools you can possibly buy, end of discussion. You can easily get a decent setup for under $200, thats including everything. Go karts break, breaks require welding.

If you do not buy a tool you need today, tomorrow you will have paid for it and not have it.

When I said "temp bolted" I was meaning that I used U-bolts to test the setup, or use it until I could use a welder... I have my own welder now (actually my 3rd) so that’s never a problem anymore... I don’t know how much they are anymore but Wal-Mart use to sell a Campbell Hausfeld welder, which might be a good start. I can’t say that it will do a very good job, but it’s a welder... And if you’re playing with karts Kenny’s right, saves on the down time... "Crap my spindle broke, ZAPPPPPPPP, good enough for government work, let’s go"...

I still think the muffler shop will be the cheap/easy route, but if there isn't one close to you then that won't work too well. Hey, Just a thought, does your highschool have a shop class/auto shop maybe you could finish it there.

You wont be able to build or run(repairs) an off road go kart without a welder. Learning to weld isnt hard, an afternoon of practice will have you making decent welds.

I think for a cheap welder you would be better off with an arc welder. For $100US here you can get a 140 amp stick/arc welder, which can weld thicker material than a 90 amp mig welder. It can also make stronger welds than a mig welder of the same amperage, and it is less fussy about surface preparation (can weld over paint). Although MIG is much easier to learn, so if your time is valuable it might be the better option.

Here's a suggestion:

You need a welder, right? But you're on a tight budget? See if you can cut a deal with your parents. Tell them you really want/need a welder and to learn how to weld, and ask them if they would put up half the price of one - you pick up the other half. (Obviously, try getting one on sale, if possible.) Include the price of gloves and a good helmet/visor in the cost, as it's part of the welding set. Alternately, ask them if they would front you the money for a setup, and pay them back when you can (and make SURE you pay them back - shows responsibility and maturity on your part.)

For instance, Harbor Freight in my area (Tucson, AZ) is having a sale on the 90-amp Mig wire-feed fluxcore welders starting March 13-15. The welder is normally $149.99, but will be going down to $87.99 for the sale. That's close to half off normal price! Good heavy leather gloves were $15.00, and a good helmet ran me about $70.00 (auto-darkening in 1/20000th of a second - a good helmet is VERY important!). So, all told, I'm looking at maybe about $170-ish for a decent beginner welding rig. Half of that would be $85.00 - my share, while my parents would put up the other half. (Actually, I got even luckier than this - my dad told me, "You go pick up the welder and what you need, and send me the bill - I'll buy it for your birthday." What a cool dad!) Trust me, I'm on an even tighter budget with this economy ....

You have nothing to lose by asking. The worst they could say is "No," but you never know until you ask ........

3 car batteries in series to get 36V, plus two sets of jumper cables, and a 2lb pack of 6013 Welding rods ($4.99 for rods at HF) is what I've been using. No way to regulate amperage, so sometimes it's a bit too powerful, but as long as the batteries are fully charged, they weld just fine.

Here's a video of someone welding with batteries:
