Really Bad Idea

Hi!

Let me tell you a story. Grab a cold one and sit down. This is the story of a "Really Bad Idea."

So. I ordered me a minibike. It was this tiny little Motovox that comes with a 2.5hp engine. It was "AS IS/FOR PARTS." $200 bucks. Can't beat that. So I ordered it and it came in today. Yay!

I put oil in it, gas in it, it started right up. Literally nothing wrong with it, other than it looks a little beat up. The ad said that it didn't run. Well it does. But that doesn't matter. That kiddy engine was going to be sold on craigslist for $20.

I have an engine sitting there, waiting to be put in something. Might as well give it a shot. Here's the before picture.

Will this work? No idea. But I'll keep you guys update.

Well like i said, rear fender and gas tank would have to be moved. But you did get it in there!!!!! Now the question, will that sucker have so much torque you cant ride it? lol, Do keep posting updates!

I'm not sure. I'm going to have to remote that electric starter from the front and shove it forward more. Then I'm going to have to align it so it matches up. I'm kinda worried about the foot pegs, may have to modify those lol.

I'm afraid that I'm going to have to create a way to steer with the drag bars lol. The only thing I'm worried about is the stupid amount of torque.

Alright, so first snag.

I'll have to weld on a larger plate for the engine to sit on, which isn't a big deal. What the issue here is the width. The shaft is nowhere aligned to the sprocket. If I move it to the right far enough to where it will be able to line the clutch up with the sprocket, that will really throw the balance off. Is that okay?

I mean, I guess I could fill a piece of square tubing with lead and weld it to the other side as a counter-weight. I'm thinking I'll have to extend the frame anyways, just so I have a place to put my feet.

Could you run a small jackshaft in between the engine and the rear sprocket, allowing one to be in line with the engine and the other sprocket in line with the rear? Can't tell from pics...looks like the carb may be in the way...

I would extend the rear back a little and add a jackshaft, instead of off setting the engine...

I was worried about the width of that engine. Running a jackshaft would be better, but that doesnt look like a very easy frame to extend. Plus if you did, the left side will have a big *** clutch in your leg going to the jackshaft.

Also, I guess you could add weight for balance like you said, but this thing is heavy enough isnt it? That 420 if I remember correctly weighs like 73lbs. Plus counter weight.... It'll add up.

Im not saying dont use the 420, but I would use a 212 (it fits perfect). That 212 has more than enough power and I think weighs 23lbs. Use the 420 for a mini chopper build or a buggy/kart.

RPM is RPM, the only difference is the 420 has more torque and will probably get you to top speed faster than the 212. People mod the 212s all the time to push way more than the stock 3600 rpm.

If you decide to use the 420, are you going to extend the frame length wise and width wise? im curious if you lengthen the frame about using that same seat.

Yeah, I remember you did say something about the width. I'll start to tear it apart and see what I can do as soon as I finish the kart I'm working on. Waiting on the gaskets and such.

i wouldnt extend the frame just make new axle mounts that extend past the back of the frame. There is plenty of room there for a jackshaft even if you dont extend anything. thatll be a hairy ride for sure!
