ratcheting axle

Ok, so this is for a winch build but feel free to imagine it's on a gokart. We use the same TAV, chain, axle, hubs, bearings as gokarts if that helps.

I want to build a winch that has ratchet function that can be activated when desired. What this means, if it was on the gokart, driving up a slope, when you release the throttle, the ratchet prevents the kart from rolling backwards, down the slope.

Same for the winch, if I were pulling someone up the hill, and I dump the throttle, the spool does not unwind the line allowing the person to back down the hill.

Any ideas on how to make that happen?

Yeah it's called a one way sprocket. But seriously the sprocket would work. And simplify it all.

The only issue with a one way sprocket is that we need the ability to unwind the spool when desired.

Why not just get one of the small harbor freight atv winches?

this build will be used in some seriously rugged terrain where portability (read gas engine) is required and so are speeds faster than a recovery winch

this is basically what I had in mind, just wasn't sure what it was called, I wonder if I can get the components and bolt on, or if I'll need my waterjet guy to cut me the custom ratchet to match my hub etc

well a sprocket won't work, since all it does is to allow freewheeling in the "opposite" direction.
what you mean is a one way bearing that'd lock in the opposite direction (unlike a one way sprocket)
But that'd be irreversible no matter what (so unspooling rope is not possible at all)
which brings us directly to this:

You can just bolt it on, but keep in mind that you might want a return spring for the pawl (to have that satisfying click and a sure lock)
and most important a lever to unlock the pawl once you need to.

Personally, since these things are terribly tough even in small sizes;
I think you could even salvage one for testing purpose from a cheapish tie-down strap you might have laying around (on the bed of your truck likely )

Right idea but, those are plastic & don't really like heavy loads...

I like what sid said about a ratchet strap, But I was thinking more like a come along. At least for R and D purposes.
