looks like you're using a universal from a socket set in your steering.
Hell of a lot of slop in them.
I used to have one on my kart, and the steering was shocking. I swapped it out for a uni join from a cars steering, it was 10x better.

Nifty! Some time back, I started planning for a scale hot rod project. I debated using a wheelbarrow tub, and may still if I can find one for a good price. I am not going to drop $150 for a new one...

I, too, had planned for a front engine, RWD setup. But instead, I was planning on using a 6.5 clone. The power train may consist of a shaft drive, but I have hit a bit of a stumbling block. I had an FNR gearbox from an old lawn tractor that I had intended to use for this purpose, but I needed it as a bargaining chip. I ultimately traded that box for the Peerless 700 tranny I needed for my race mower build... That's okay- the Hot Rod is waaay down the priority list.

Meantime, I am watching your build for developments! LOL

You may want to consider making those front suspension arms longer.

Got the engine mount done today.

What was you reason for mounting the engine that high?

Mostly leg room down the sides, and there is also just enough vertical height for the kick start to do a full cycle. So I'll make a brace that goes over the top just in front of the cowl, the chain will run horizontal to the jackshaft then out the side. I'm considering cam gear and timing belt with tension wheel for down the side. Don't know yet, see what turns up.

The problems with a belt are: 1. they stretch 2. where will you find one long enough to run the length of your kart; a V belt yes but, a timing belt? A chain with twin tensioners is another idea...

Yeah I've got a couple of sprockets with bearings in them which I can use for tensioners. Plenty of V belt and pulley as well. Maybe a combination. I'll just drag it all out and have a look. In the meantime I've decided on a truck stack style exhaust for now and possibly this round air filter assembly.

Also considering a simplified version of this for the front end and running mini bike wheels. It will never be for hooning, just a casual cruiser.

The air cleaner is terrific. The truck stack is OK, too. But have you considered one lake pipe, swept back, on each side?

The original plan was to run lake pipes down either side and only changed my mind this morning.

Got the engine kicked over today, start on the drive line tomorrow.

Brake now installed, I worked it so the old bike foot pedal will act as a hand brake and I'll also run a cable to foot brake. Doing clutch and gear stick now before finishing off the drive line. I want to make sure that's all done so I'm not tempted to drive it unfinished.

See the blue discoloration on your exhaust stack? There is a reversion pulse right there. If you ever want to play games with the exhaust note, start in that vicinity.

I'll have to look into that, I'm not real familiar with tuned exhausts. Thanks for the info though.

Update- Added a couple of extra rails into the chassis, installed a seat, accelerator and clutch pedal hooked up, and gear stick done. I welded a bolt to the top after these pics and put a screw on shift knob. The steering column will be modified once again with an extra uni joint in the mix to turn it up more vertically. I'm also building a transmission type tunnel through the centre and the chain will run though it to the back.

Looking good. Is your motor mount going to be sturdy enough?

It looks a little sketchy but is surprisingly sturdy. Everything gets a good couple of whacks with a lump hammer just to be sure because I know no other way to tell if my welds are strong. I have a friend who is a fitter by trade, he was over this afternoon and said my welds are looking good. I like hearing stuff like that. I guess only time can tell, I mean this thing was only ever going to be a compilation of scrap that I would hopefully only putt around in at best. Something to drag along to a car show or two and park up with the other ratty rigs.
