I'm on a few forums and something has been really "grinding my gears" lately. It is the fact that people don't seem to care to take the time typing so that we can understand them. I can't tell you how many people don't bother to capitalize their "I"s. I'm not really good with grammar, but at least I take the time to capitalize my "I"s and sure SOME punctuation. It seems to me that we have a bit of an epidemic of horrible grammar on this forum. If someone was giving me advise and didn't bother to use understandable grammar, then I would assume that they don't know much of what their talking about. This is not just kids on this forum either, however it is pretty bad on this forum.

Capitalize "I"s: Is it really that hard to hit the shift key? Call me OCD or picky, but come on.....

Example:

WRONG= i like to ride my kart.

CORRECT= I like to ride my kart.

Each sentence should start with a capital letter.

Example:

WRONG= my go kart broke.
CORRECT= My go kart broke.

If everyone did those TWO things than this forum would be much more enjoyable to read. It does not take long. If you have trouble using proper grammar/spelling (aka human), then I would do one of two things.

If you don't already have it, use Firefox or another browser that has spell-check.

Or, type out your post in Microsoft Word, use that spell-check, then copy/paste it.

All that being said, I make errors all the time. Hell, I probably made grammar errors in this post, but you can be assured that I will always capitalize my "I"s and start my sentences with a capital letter.

Sorry. I thought other people capitalized their "I"s in situations other than English class.

WOW dude calm down. its not that bad. i or I they both mean the same. its a forum not grammar class.

I totally agree Dave. Its like reading a children's writing.

Bman, you can capitalise WOW but you cant to the beginning of a sentence?

Yes, its a forum and a pretty cool one. When people post with masses of grammatical errors it makes it so hard to read I pretty much just leave that thread. Someone learning English is totally different thou, I have the utmost respect for them and am willing to help. But someone thats fluent in English? Come on it's not that hard, there is spell checkers and all sorts of other stuff to help.

I can stand not capitalizing I's and words at the beginning of a sentence... my problem is when people typ lik dis and u cnt tll what their sayn (seriously... think of someone trying to describe something technical like that) and when they have sporadic, random, run-on sentences.

Thanks, Dave- That's been one of my pet peeves for decades. Applied locally, no, this isn't English class. No, I don't expect perfection. But- there's a distinct difference between a typo, and the senseless slaughter of the language. I'll tolerate quite a bit, but there's a limit. If I have to fight that hard to make sense of what you're trying to say, I'm probably not going to be bothered trying to help. Sounds cold, doesn't it? Here's my reasoning:

A vast majority of posts here are asking for help. Effort on my part. So- you expect me to put forth effort to assist you, yet you put forth no effort in asking for assistance? That just doesn't seem right, does it?

Yes, there're exceptions to every rule, and I do my best to recognize them. But you can't tell me that many people are illiterate/visually impaired/have no fingers and are trying to type with forearm stumps. Especially with what I call textspeak. Wut knd f rims shud i by lol.
Grrrrr!

Ha....this is what I do sometimes. I usually have to read through my post and fix up the odd mistakes that I have made. I also make a point of trying to capitalise all my I's. I also think it looks a bit sloppy if they aren't.

It doesn't take too long to do all of this, so there is really no excuse for bad grammer and punctuation. MS Word fixes all that for you, or tells you there is a problem anyway.
