Rant Alert- A myriad of school provoked thoughts

Hire people to make and fix the machines? I agree with everybody here. Im not going to collage. Im going to a trade school called auburn career center for welding or auto tec. Its really cheap.

Way back in the early '80's, as a kid I started getting very interested in computers. My grandfather was a tool and die maker, and one day we had the "what do you want to do with your life?" talk. He told me to go ahead and pursue my interest, but make absolutely dang sure I always had a trade to fall back on.

Tell you what- the old guy (rest his soul) was right. The market flooded with budding young computer geeks, to the point where university grads in computer science were flipping burgers. Guess what? I'm still in the trades!

I was thinking happy wasn't the right word, you hit the nail on the head. Going back now to change the wording.

What exactly does a tool and die maker do? Make taps, dies, milling bits, etc?

A tool and die maker hand fabricates tools and dies- without being funny- we're talking about making the critical parts for machinery that makes things. For example, take a group of machines that mass-produces bolts. A fella like my grandfather would have made all the job-specific parts that comprise the machines. Not motors, swithes and rams- I'm referring to moulds, dies, cutters, etc.

I worked in a tap and die factory in Maine for about three months in 1996. The machinery was fascinating, but the job sucked. I wasn't a tool maker, though. I was just doing dumb grunt work, running the machines. The thread rollers were really cool.

i probably wont go to collage. my grades are pretty bad and thats because its hard for me to just sit in a classroom for 82 minutes drilling geometry, world civ, bio, or literature. yet i can turn wrenches all day no problem.

i was that kid that took apart everything and usually broke it. but now i can take apart a small engine and put it all back together. i remember when i was into nitro R/C cars i went into the hobby shop and bought a new chassis, unscrewed my entire car and moved all the pieces over to the new chassis with a screwdriver in under an hour. the guy thought i was nuts. haha.

youre not stupid if you get bad grades, and wont be going to collage, some people just have way different learning styles. id rather be a low-middle class mechanic than be a rich lawyer.

next year, tech school, i hope to take welding, then senior year take auto. best thing about that is its FREE. and as long as you show effort and youre serious about the trade, they will help you find a job.

I've always believed that people are born geniuses, and are taught to be stupid. That's what school is for. It is engineered to turn smart kids of all types into idiots who don't question authority. The number one priority in all cases is conformity.

Well i get all A's because i determine myself at school. I dont wanna sound like a d but school is for school. I work hard and my grades are a reflection of that. Yeah i like mechanics and stuff and karts and welding etc. as hobbies. I want to be a lawyer and if being rich or poor comes with that i dont care. Im not a stuck up person who has no life other than school i enjoy doing other stuff i just have my priorities straight. I get a talking to every once in a while from my dad who tells me that school is my job. Im preparing myself now for my future and if i screw around now that my future will be a result of it.

That said im like you guys too. As soon as im done with school its straight to the yard to work on karts, bikes, welding, engines, whatever i can find to do. Im not one of those kids that stand there and get told what to do all day either. i question authority and act how i feel is right thats kinda what makes me want to be a lawyer. I mean yeah i love mechanics and thatll always be a fallback and take up most of my time as an adult as well.

I agree with you guys with the whole getting mad at schools and honestly i couldnt agree more. My school had an engineering and metal working class that got removed and replaced with "technology" and sewing. "technology" being how to use microsoft word....... AND ITS A GRADUATION REQUIREMENT!! im totally against it. today we had a test in history and i had to know the order of classes in ancient rome i remembered EPSEPFS(emperor, patricians, senators, equestrians, plebians, freed slaves, and slaves) by making this up. EP ( meaning my school) Sucks Eggs Please Fire Sheehan(my principal.....) it worked

A technology and sewing class, eh? You dont think you'll ever run into a time that'll come in handy? I've used our sewing machine on multiple occasions.

IMO, ALL students should be required to take some sort of everyday knowledge class; as in Home economics, home repair, etc. The fact that classes like that have been taken out of schools is just pitiful.

i know how to use technology and my mom is a professional when it comes to sewing. She went to college to be a fashion designer and made dresses and tuxedos for weddings, uniforms, proms etc. for a living. I know practical skills.

Although prosecuting attorneys job is supposed to be to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the defendant is guilty, many (or most) of them simply try their hardest to convict no matter what.

I hope you didn't end up with the wrong impression- I was trying to be funny- sort of.
I have a dim view of most defense attorneys- I was not trying to imply that anyone here is a sleazeball.

Some of my best friends are sleazeballs...
