Hey all, I got a rack steering setup from bmi karts and it don't have NEAR enough travel for my needs. It's only about 3 inches lock to lock and I need 6. Any ideas on a longer travel rack? Thanks.
You can largely alter the throw of the steering by changing the leverage that the rack has on the steering arms. Drill new holes in the arms closer to the kingpin for more throw.
The way my a arms are built I'm about as close to the pin as I can get. I took the rack apart and noticed the grooves for the steering shaft only go half way across the shaft. If I have the rest of the shaft grooved then it will travel as far as I need. I realize I will have to turn the steering wheel more but thats ok.
I'm using the heavy duty welded spindles from bmi. The tie rod end hole is about 3 inches from the a arm ball joint. My camera battery is dead so I can't get pix right now.
Only thing I can think is to either extend the tie rods somehow, or use intermediate linkages that are in the right spot for your current tie rods....the second option would be a fair bit more work though and kinda pointless
