Racing Seat

I have thoughts about using a "real" racing-style seat in place of the plastic thing that I currently call a seat (example). I would like a bit of padding/foam/something-besides-plastic and cutouts for a 4 point harness.

Has anyone else already done this? I don't know much about seats, so is there something specific I should look for or avoid?

My motivation: First off, it would look cool. Also, I ride over some pretty rough terrain; my kart doesn't have much in the way of a suspension & adding said suspension is probably outside my budget and definitely outside my skill set. I'm also getting ready to replace the poor functioning seat belt with a 4 point harness, and they seem to kind of go together.

I read a recent thread on this subject; try searching the forum.

In said recent thread, it was mentioned that, because racing rules are updated every few years, so too are racing seats & harnesses so you should be able to pick some up fairly cheap & you know they'd be good quality

No sir, A REAL racing seat, used or new, will run about 500 dollars. I have a kirkey racing seat, which is a bottom line "cheap" racing seat and i bought it used after about 2 months of looking. 500$ plus shipping. Now you can pick up the racing style seat for cheaper. It wont be a legal racing seat although you probably will never need it to be, and no one can really tell exept brand name.

But for the 4 point harness, You can probable find the right deal and pick up a Simpson 5 point harness for around 60-70 dollars. (Simpson is used in NASCAR)

And make sure the seat DOESNT have shoulder supports or neck supports, otherwise you will not be able to see to your left or right

Whoa, 2 months of looking and cheapest you could find was $500 online? Here in Wisconsin, don't know how it is where you live, but here we have toms of race tracks, and therefore tons of parts and cars going around. Guys are getting new cars, and getting new seats. Or if your real lucky, are getting out of racing and really could care less how much they sell for.

The seats here, you could probably find a nice kirky for 75-100. Belts you can ask around and probably get some 50 or even under. Just have to pay attention to racing sites and what not.

Mighta been me that mentioned it- I had a friend give me a legit racing seat freebie because the local thunder car track rules have outlawed fibreglass. He gave me a harness, too.

Maybe start hanging out at your local track and asking folks...
