Race prep mower transmission

Do people shift when they're racing their race lawnmowers with "race prepped" trannys? Or is it more of a-put-it-in-the-gear-you-want-and-go kinda deallio.

I think they use a right angle gear box and then chain and sprocket rear end similr to a kart. So no tranny to shift.

At sears I saw a 22HP mower for 750 USD used. Didn't know they sold USED. I was wondering how these worked.

They just put it gear and go, you are not suppose to shift while going.

I think this fellow removed 2 of the shift keys in the transaxle to make shifting a bit easier.

I wonder how well that transaxle would hold up to down shifting.

^^Im not sure, I thought I heard him mention removing them in one of his videos.
I know some are better built than others, I would imagine there could be some difference in the number of shift keys.

I recently took apart a Spicer 5 speed and it only has 2.

I have and old H-shift pattern 3 speed transmission off of a murray ride one, I read somewhere that they were rare and worth something? If they are it would surprise me.

Anyway I opened it up and found out that it doesn't use shift keys and instead has the motorcycle type of transmission with the slidy dog-clutch setup (I don/t know what that setup is called) and I was wondering if this transmission would work better for a go kart or mini bike if I put bearings in it and made it more robust.

A dog clutch system is much more reliable than the drive key system, as there is a more direct way of connecting the involved forces. also spreads out the energy than keeping it to 2 places.
