I got the clutch sorted ...... looks way better than with the clutch sprocket facing the outside. I just hope it has enough key engagement to hold up to some abuse.

A little progress.....
I have the main frame tube and front forks mocked up. It obviously still needs some bracing and gusseting. I am building more "trail" into the fork geometry this time to avoid a negative trail situation when leaning far into turns. My fat tire 2x2 has that issue.

After widening the wheels 3" to 11.5" wide of course I couldn't get the tire beads seated on the wheel, even with lighter fluid. I had to stretch the tires with some 12" pieces of pvc in front of a heater for a day, then they seated first try.

Where did you order the 5 liter NATO can? I can't find them anywhere that doesn't charge $80 apiece for them. I've been looking for one to use as a gas tank.

I got it on Amazon for about $35. It was a lot taller before I cut it down and added a tunnel for the frame.

And did you mention how the two speeds works? I might have missed that. I tend to skim over stuff scanning for keywords and miss a lot.

Anyway, did I mention how much I like it!

I rode it for the first time today...... and it is AWESOME! It handles beautifully and stops effortlessly, but most surprising of all is the POWER! It has waaaay more grunt and speed than I was expecting. My friend Dan followed me on his new Honda scooter and said I was doing an easy 25mph, and it can accelerate up a fairly steep hill in first gear no problem. The coolest part though is the 2 speed.... it is soooo satisfying when it grabs second. Second hits hard, but the engine definitely drops out of its power band, so I'm thinking of changing the spring in the jackshaft clutch back to an 1800 rpm which would have it shift into second at about 4100 rpm vs 3300 rpm now. The mikuni carb started right up and the hot dog muffler is pretty loud and "poppy", and man does she like to rev. It was hovering around 5000 rpm at 25 mph and was still climbing. I think it will do 6k.... esp downhill. We have a trail riding session planned for this weekend, and I will be sure to get some video.

This is the coolest thing that I have seen on this site in a long time. Wardog, you are talented and I admire your little machine. Not very many people are willing to start a project like this and finish it. There are people that talk and then there are people that do. You have done it!

Thanks everyone for the positive comments. It really keeps me motivated and it feels good for my work to be admired. Hopefully this will inspire someone else to build something unique.

Here is the 2 speed setup.

Looks so cool... Your going to need a clutch chain guard for sure...
A couple of years ago a person here cut his leg open with the spinning clutch bell... I think he was doing a test... No guard..

I like this setup, is there somewhere I can read up on how this two speed works? Just having a hard time wrapping my head around it.

Im working on guards now. I almost took my right thumb off last summer in the chain of my 2x2 bike.

Here is a thread on omb about 2 speeds. Lots of good info on this site.

The key part in a 2 speed is the overrunning sprocket (one way sprocket) that allows the higher second gear to spin the jackshaft faster than the first gear sprocket.

The key part is also the trickiest part, especially if you want something a little beefier than the NOS comets that are floating around. I think black widow Motorsports has some in stock. Overrunning bearings are fairly easy and inexpensive to find... In metric. Which means lathe work to make custom bushings. Sprag and backstop assemblies are available in every shape and size, but they don't come cheap, that's for sure.

Are you happy with the gearing? Does it have enough low end torque? Does it have enough top end power? I've never used an 80cc engine so I'm curious. Looks to do pretty well!
