Tillotson 212; 24mm Nibbi, stock innards. I've got a garden variety exhaust with a hot dog muffler. Runs great but is NOISY. Scares the deer.

Any ideas for a quieter muffler that won't rob too much power?

Thanks in advance.

Are you using a genuine Briggs 294599 type or one of those Chinese copies? The Chinese copies screw-on but have no center seam and are more blingy. Never seen inside one of those. I wonder if that rainbow coating survives the heat…

I think someone here used two hot dogs welded together and doubled their fun. Be great if they came threaded on both ends.

The hot dog muffler quiets down the customary straight pipe header a good bit. Puts an end, largely, to the brappiness and if you didn’t re-jet, the backfire or I should say the poppety-pop-pop afterfire. The hot dog is a glorified spark arrestor… Even the box mufflers on riding mowers are loud.

You’re going to have to go bigger and more car like. A oval muffler with a chamber(s) and partitions?

Go to any parts store. Buy an 18 inch tail pipe evtension that will slide onto your muffler. get some hardware cloth. Roll a piece of that into abour a 1 inch tube the same length as the tail pipe piece. Wrap fiberglass insulation around the hardware cloth and slide in into the tail pipe. Drill a hole and use a screw to retain the baffle. It will be much quieter with no added restriction.

Thanks for this. I'm having a bit of trouble envisioning what you propose. Will you grace me with a picture please? I like the idea, but am drawing a blank on exactly what it is I'm looking for.

Many thanks in advance...
