So I guess my dad is going to keep his Cub Cadet lawn tractor for me. Has a 16hp Briggs Vanguard V-twin with about 650 hours on it. Needs the valves re-lashed. So basically I now have an engine that I can use for a go kart project for FREE the nice thing is, on this particular lawn tractor the main PTO runs an electro-magetic clutch for the mower deck, and the flywheel side has a pto that hooks up to the hydrostatic transaxle, meaning I could theoretically put a pulley on the flywheel side for an alternator.

Been there before. Hopefully they'll figure something out, maybe give all the customers a discount on the next bill as a nice gesture...might be wishful thinking.

On a similar note, I thought I would let you guys know about a wonderful thing we have here in South Africa called Load Shedding. This is the brilliant idea that the power company (there is only one here in SA and it is semi government owned) came up with because:

• They are useless
• Cannot and will not do preventative maintenance
• There is corruption on a scale that is unprecedented

So....because power stations are down for maintenance all the time, and because they say that coal stocks are critically low, they need to save electricity somehow. The brilliant idea that they came up with is to cut power to different parts of the country and town suburbs at scheduled times during the day. This is supposed to take the strain off the grid.

What this means though is that every office building now has a humongous generator, and every household has bought a small one. A schedule is published for each suburb telling you when the power is going to go out. If they need to shed more power, they move onto a more aggressive schedule.

So instead of running one big generator and supplying the whole city in an efficient way, they cut power. This only makes sense to make more money. Did the elec co. offer rebates or the likes on generators? Or do they own the gas company too? Gotta sell more gas to run all those gennys.

I don't think that living on a dead end is a factor. I live on the very end of a road, and the only time that my internet goes out is when the powers out, or our well house gets hit by lightning.

That's what I hate about GPS and Google maps, sometimes you don't end up being anywhere near the place you want to be. Last year when I was doing fertilizer, one house in particular had a long driveway, maybe 1/8 of a mile long. The google maps app would put me on a major road running parallel to the property, but not turn me on the actual road for the driveway.

If this keeps up, I'm not looking forward to self driving cars. You could end up being a ways off from your intended destination.

They wont come down my road either. But I guess that makes sense being that the road coming to my property officially stops about 700 feet from my gate.

Stopped north of Des Moines, Iowa today to visit with my dad (3 hours for us and 3 hours for him) and to pick up some Venison and some more of my tools. Cannot wait for him to be retired soon, he deserves it for sure after what he's been through.

I could, but that is quite an expensive layout, so I haven't really looked into it yet. I just run my little generator for the two hours or whatever a day and bear it

Speaking of crap that goes out, the whole dealership is without internet. So no repair orders can be made, parts cannot be ordered, nothing can be done. This morning, dealerconnect was down. So basically haven't had anything to do all day.

Ironically after I posted the above bit, internet came back online.

And there was a time when we never had internet at all. Or when all we had was dial-up and you needed a modem. Remember the noises it made when you connected?? How did we cope?

I also remember before mobile phones came to South Africa. If you needed to make a call you had to find a landline!! And we survived too

Yeah I remember dial-up internet all to well. Someone gets a phone call, and you'd think the apocalypse just rolled in. I'm just surprised that my work doesn't have any contingency plans in the event that the internet goes down.

Welp, just placed an order on Rock auto for some parts for a long build that'll be on here in the next year or so. At this point its becoming Johnny Cash's Cadillac...just hope it won't take me 24 years to put it all together.

Well, Christmas came early... 2 CV axles for a 1977 Volkswagen Beetle, that'll be used for a Briggs powered mini buggy. So far for the project I have, 2 hanger bearings, 1 60tooth 41/40 sprocket, 2 Nilight 6" 65watt LED flood lights and a Briggs and Stratton Vanguard.

Now all I need is steel, a CVT (toss up between a 94c Duster and a Comet 780), few odds and ends, and a freaking garage to build the dang thing.
