Margay shifter coming back to life, evolution

i recently bought this margay shifter kart with a briggs 5hp on it, i have questions about what model it is what year and what size my rear axel is since i am in desprate need of a axel collar, it has the 5 spoke margay rims if that helps at all, and would like to know what a good sproket size is for this kart, mine is kinda big

You need to measure your axles diameter, It'll probably be a 1 inch or 1-1/4". Once you know your axle size you can buy your axle collar from most any online racekart shop.
Try here:--> http://www.cometkartsales.com/store/axles/axle.htm

Post the number of teeth on your clutch and rear sprocket, and also include how many inches tall your back tires are. Then we can give you some gear ratio advice.

If that's a Margay, you should find some serial numbers stamped into the frame near the right front spindle. Then If you emailed those numbers to Margay karts: (here:->http://www.margay.com/company/contact.html) they'll tell you what year and model it is.

thanks, now i would really like to know engine wise what i should go with on it, mine is good and i know i can make it faster but is it worth the money or is there a better way or better engine?
and i will be posting pics throughout refurbishing my kart thanks.

You could have a lot of fun with your old engine unless you'll be racing other karts with more power.

I think your Margay is an early-1970's Sprintkart or possibly an Enduro model. A Shifterkart chassis will usually have front brakes. But whatever you got there, I think its really cool :thumbsup:

Looking good man.

Did you find the serial numbers stamped into the frame yet? I was kinda wondering what year and model Margay said it was...

I curious what year and model you have also. i have a 82 bandito i am going to redo with a kx 250 motor on it just haven't had the time to start it yet. i am finishing up an old rupp with a 13hp honda first before i can start it.

mounting the motor is actually the easy part. getting a pipe and radator and all the other little stuff for a good price is the hard part.

baically it'll mount using a mount similiar to this one but nobody makes one for a kx250 so i'll need to build my own. the tall mount mounts on the rear piovot mount of the motor and the short mount is for the bottom motor mount. basically you will sandwhich the rails of the go kart between the mounts and a second piece that mounts on the underside the bolts come up through.
I'm using the kx motor because i have a good complete running motor and i can get a auto clutch for it which will make it much easier to use without worrying about stalling the motor.
if you need any help let me know i've researched what i could find and came up with some ideas on my own how i want to build mine may be able to give you some ideas if you like. my personal opion is though if your kx250 isn't ready to go i'd look for a cr250 engine because you can easily find all the mounts radiators and pipes for these motors because they are the most commonly used to build shifter karts.

well i have all the parts to my bike its a complete bike, are you saying that i would need a diffrent kind of radiator and pipe to make this work on my kart? and what are you making your engine mount out off?

i'm having a buddy machine it out of aluminum for me since he's got the tools for it. the bike pipe is made to run out around the bike frame and will be a bit tall and not look as nice as a kart pipe which they don't make for the kx motor and it wouldn't be easy to mod a cr one as the pipe mount to the head with a different style flange. you can make the radiator work im sure i'm not 100percent how i am going to do mine yet as i want something that looks perfosional. i also not planning on spending 400 bucks on one either so i might be makeig a quad radiator work.
