If no clutch...maybe, but I would be very interested in seeing this set up myself.

Usually we would say no because you would danage the clutch...but with no clutch its a different story. Tell me how this set up would work, how do you aquire a neutral? Gearing? Shifting if any? Any pics?

no Sir we don't have any pics as kart is not build-ed yet. we are designing go-kart to pass virtual test. as per the requirements it is clearly mentioned that we have to eliminate the use of clutch. so now the question is how we gonna vary speed of kart? if we are designing sprockets and chain for 60km/hr speed the how come we reach to it directly?

It is a bit hard to tell from that pic if there is a clutch or not, but if there isn't, then it will get started while it is on a stand, or it will be push startedwith the rider inside

To vary the speed without a clutch is as simple as pushing the accelerator down more. The engine will turn faster, turning the wheel faster too. You will hit a peak when the engine reaches its max rpm's though

Hmmm this has me thinking. Have you evet seen "speed racer"? Well amyways he has a car that he pushes a button and jacks lift the car up.

How about if you had a stand that came down from the frame attached to a lever? You could put the kart on the stand (think of a kickstand for a motorcycle) get in, start the engine, then pull the lever and the stand swings up back to the kart, letting the kart wheels hit the ground and take off...

The engine in that picture looks like a motorcycle engine which would mean it has a built in transmission... so it would have a neutral and depending what model engine it is, it may have a automatic which would not use a clutch (but still requires shifting)

Sharp-eye Justin9 nailed it. If you look at the brackets which attach the engine to the frame, it's a motorcycle engine, and you can see the counter-shaft sprocket. It's either a regular shifter or an automatic. Plus, there's an hydraulic brake on the axle. Without a clutch, how could a driver hit brake and not stall the engine?

Something tells me that this teacher of yours is using the "automobile" definition of clutch, where-as with using that definition a torque converter is not a clutch.

that kart up there has a clutch;
it has a gearbox, and in order to change gears... you need a clutch.

clutchless karts are possible, some Racing karts run in classes w/o clutch.
but it's nothing you'd want as a fun/hobby kart at all!

A kart that you cannot have running and standing still at the same time can be a very dangerous thing, for you and bystanders.

So, for safety reasons; just don't!
