Question bout mufflers...

Its amazing what you can do in an hour sometimes......I only drilled 1/8" holes in the tube, about 60 of them. Should have a new predator by this weekend if things work out. Will post a video of the exhaust note when its installed.

This is the one I was talking about. Its tune able by removing or adding material by drilling out the rivets and removing the ends. This one was for my bike 2"id/od 3" body and 12" long. It was a weee bit loud

well... IMHO.... Im out for 'muffling' the sound and what sound that does escape, I want to be low in tone as well as decibels. Im figuring the 'volume' is the initial culprit(muffler), then the 'tone'(resonator).

If I had a 2 stroker... Id be making that sucker as loud as possible(mainly cause I like the sound of a weedeater).

I gotta friend of mine bending the header for me to the appropriate shape. Hoping Ill get it by Sunday/Monday to trim and fit it up for welding!

Although I prefer a few decibals, I too prefer a deeper note.

My former car was a 4 cylinder which (eventually) had a 2" straight through exhaust with a resonator in the middle; yes, it was loud but, it was deep. My son joked that he didn't think it suited the car, like "wow, something mean sounding is coming, it must be behind that red piece of junk..."

It makes me laugh (& cry 'coz it hurts my ears) when I hear a 4 cylinder with a loud, tinpipe exhaust, like the owner thinks it sounds good when their car goes BLAAAAAAAT down the street.

When I had my frame bent up, I deliberately had them bend 2 extra pieces (at different angles) for that exact purpose...

I gatcha. I was only posting that as an example, not for you to actually go with those dimensions. That was for a street bike, I actually had two. High side duals.

You could make something similar with a larger case for that deeper tone. That's what I'm looking for to, nice deep tone.

That's going to be my next project.

I tried this before with red paint and I had a cool surprise.... Gonna try with yellow to see it better...... Under the paint on the side of the pipe facing out, I engraved DIYGOKARTS.COM , when this cheap paint starts to heat and bake, the letters will become visible because the grooves turn dark..... When I mount it and video the sound, I'll show you the letters....
And yes, I know it got a little crooked along the way..... I was doing it rested in my lap,turned sideways..... then carpal tunnel set in.... lol ,gettin old......

Well, the 'trial' one my friend is attempting to bend atm is actually a section of the old green Carter frame(using EVERY lil bit!)... but if that dont work then gonna have to go w/ something else(no other long enough sections).

They have sections like this pic, at the mower store I goto. The section Im needing will be a 'cock-eyed' "c" shaped header... so this one will be over halfway there as far as bends and Im pretty sure the dimensions are correct...

Nope... its just an example of the bend/pipe(google image). The one I was actually referring to is one w/out the lil flange.

Ill be cutting off the muffler mounting plate off the factory exhaust port connection(45degree bend 'elbow' off the block), and welding that pipe to it. The attached exhaust pipe will trumpet curve, up...over towards the front... down and curved back towards under the 'elbow' ('C' shaped). At that end ill be welding a nut that will tread to the OEM muffler. After that Ill be fabing the resonator to cover the nut and muffler itself. Ill probably just pipe clamp the resonator as that it doesnt perform differently sealed or not(just a sound/heat cover basically). Ill wrap the header itself in that exhaust wrap... if I can find any layin round the shop. After all is 'done'... I gotta a friend that does powerder coating.... thinking ALL, gloss black, and a red line running the length of the resonator/cover ontop.

I was thinking of adding a lil 'bowl'/reservoir inside the resonator to hold a bit of transmission fluid. For those that know what happens to transmission fluid when 'cooked'... lets just say... its a James Bond thing...lol.

.... and the cherry ontop... Im getting a state plate that will say "LAT-LOD"(for those that dont know... Asian folk have no "r's" in their vocabulary(atleast not the Japanese).... picture 'that' hanging out the back trunk of a Toyota Camery your following behind....

Being a newbie, I'm not sure if its mild steel or chromoly. Sounds like it may be mild steel. Hah, gatcha, make sure he doesn't screw anything up

That one looks like it would be a little easier to cut and fit, especially if you bought two.

.... i wont lie....(im a noob too)... I have no idea what 1 metal is from the other(other than aluminum and steels differences). I know there's a 'seam' that can be seen inside the pipe/tubeing and it's 3/16" thick, and not at all easy to bend! My friend is 200+lbs and it took all his weight to bend the tube alil.

He works in an industrial electrical store as the manager... so im sure if he messes up on the pipe I gave him to form/bend, he has connections... so finding a replacement/improvement is just a Rolodex call away.

Sounds like it may be steel. 3/16", wow that's going to be a stout exhaust. I think mine will be .059/16 gauge SS.
I wonder what he's using to bend it, do you know?

Manual leverage bender... Ppl w/ an @$$ r the only ones that can use it... effectively. I blame my mom for marrying a lil guy!... So I cant use such tools!... Lol

that slick exhaust reminds me of the Royal Enfield Thunderbird 500.

Aftermarket exhausts are the thing here. you can find every other two wheeler having custom exhausts. a large bore FFE note enhancer (NOTE- CBR 600) costs around 5-10$ here- due to their high popularity, they are cheap here

Didnt work right, but it gets the job done I reckon....
As far as the yellow muffler goes, Im not happy with the sound. I like it loud, but deep. Not a high pitch scream.... Next, Im gonna build one with a bigger diameter outer tube,bigger holes and a different pattern on the through pipe, and probably shorter overall. I will add a bell to the yellow one just for fun,and also try making it shorter from head to muffler. Any ideas or suggestions? Gonna start a new one next week.

I dont know if you did or not... there is gonna need to be 'packing'/dampener in there(steel-wool/fiberglass). The packing dampens the 'high' end sound(I used to design speaker boxes as a hobby for lil over 10+yrs... used packing to dampen high end frequency sounds, like 'hisses', that the EQ/resistors wouldnt/couldnt remove).

The opening/exit being wider 'will' amplify the db's/loudness, but will also allow more of the unwanted sounds to be heard... Try integrating a 'baffle' w/ packing, in the opening before you trash that fabrication...

...you can be my guinipig... seeing as that Im still working on the design of mine.

Well, Tihm, Ive been "designing" in my head a lot here lately. I thought about packing the outer tube with stainless "steel wool", but not sure about how much to pack. I like the sound of Flowmaster mufflers and thought about emulating something of there design. Only, they dont make round ones. So, I was gonna make an oval-ish large od muffler, with only the "delta wing" design used in Flowmasters. The in and out pipe will still be 7/8" od (3/4" id).... An inch of pipe from flange,into a bend. Then into the muffler, about 3" od by 5" and now that I think about it, just an inch of exiting pipe stepped up to a 90° bend of 1 1/8" pipe.....Does that "sound" too "busy"?
