Ordered a live axle kit from amazon that came with 428 sprocket and chain. My question is, Is it possible to grind out the 420 clutch I have to accomodate the 428 chain? Anybody tried this? With any success?

Thing about that is it absolutely does not. The 428 has a wider barrel if Im remembering correctly but whatever it is it dosnt get seated all the way and jams up. If I were only grabbing a spoke or two of the sprocket with it it'd maybe work but that dosnt sound the healthiest for the clutch sprocket either and in my thinking probably worse

Damgaardr-- you are absolutely correct, #428 chain has to have both sprockets cut to fit the larger roller in the chain. They are not interchangeable. And grinding the clutch sprocket to fit the larger roller is a waste of time because if the sprocket is cased hardened you are taking away the case and it will wear quicker than an ice cream cone in AZ.

Ive got an old clutch drum I was gonna try to file down so the new one Ive barely used dosnt get abused. If anything I just need it to work until I get a new chain or clutch but I cant even find anyone willing to say itll work at all.

It must be a China clutch drum because Max-Torque doesn't make a 10 #428 sprocket? We do make a 12 tooth #428 sprocket for Europe, but I just have never gotten any demand for the 10 tooth just because in the States we either use a #41 sprocket or a #40 sprocket -- there is no such thing as a #420 sprocket because #41 and #420 chain is the same thing except the #420 chain is pre-stretched #41 chain.

You would have to grind both sides of the sprocket evenly to make it fit and it just isn't worth it.
