I am working on an old kart for my nephew and had a few questions about the final drive system.

Its a Honda 5.5 horizontal engine with the PTO shaft on the drivers side and mounted in the center of the frame (rear). The clutch appears busted even though the kart will drive, it makes alot of noise so i will replace it. The belt is then routed to another pully (unkn if its a driven type clutch) which is at the end of a typical jack shaft. The jacK shaft is over the top parallel to the larger sprocket on the wheel...chain conects the two.

The question is I cannot find a similar setup online to see about replcament parts. The bearings for the jackshaft are shot, as is the chain and sprockets.

I will have it at the house this weekend and will provide pictures if necessary. I am an experienced amateur ATV and auto mechanic...but the karts are a first .

Thank You,

PS

I have busted bearings and jackshaft in my go kart. the bearsing havent moved for ....years and ive been using it still. I took it apart, the jackshaft is worn halfway through due to rubbing on the bearings. Ill have to take pictures because its just crazy. If you know what kind of kart it is just search google for "name of kart manual" or "parts"

You may have to replace the bearings with pillow block bearings. Im assuming your clutch is a torque converter, which is a type of CVT. Replacing the clutch would cost quite a bit (whole setup is $150 depending on model), i would say the noise is most likely either a dry dirty driven clutch, and/or your bad jackshaft bearings. Pictures would definitely help.

The clutch looks like it is missing the outer cover and there is a knocking noise coming from the area (not rod knock) when at idle. I thought when I gave it a quick once over that the pully on the other end of the belt was just that...a pully not a driven clutch. I was planning on upgrading the jack shaft to the pillow bearing style. I will get pics this weekend.

OK here are the pics. I believe the driven pulley is not the TC type and the pillow bearing is one piece. I should be able to replace all this at the local northern tool. the front steering is all crooked but shoud be just adjustments to the tie rids.

The accelerator does not actuate the cable so I will need to replace that as well.

Also, whats the procedure for gettting the clutch off?

Any tips are welcome.

Yea you should be able to get the bearings at TC. I personally wouldnt replace the centrifugal clutch unless its not working right, if its just a little noisy, i would take it apart, clean it up, lightly oil the bushing and put it back together. theres a few ways to get the clutch off, easiest would be an impact wrench. Next easiest would be to carefully stick something between the flywheel fins to stop the engine from turning over. And last but least you can just coil some nylon rope into the sparkplug hole (dont let the end go in) which will stop the piston from moving.

Do not do that! Let it soak in kero or some thing for a couple of days, use a wire brush to remove the rust and other crap first. Dont cut it off, you could ruin a good clutch that just needed cleaning or worse, you could damage the shaft on the engine.....

The clutch is shot...outer cover gone, missing springs and one the shoes is cracked. I have it soaking with PB breakfree so hopefuly I can get it off without having to ersort to drastic measures.

Thats simply a belt drive cent. clutch running to a jackshaft..

Soak it in PB blaster, make sure the set screw on the inside near the motor is loose.. (its on the clutch mainshaft.. setscrew)
loosen nut tap it off..

i looked and did not see a set screw but will check again between the motor and clutch. On the outside there are two holes for a set screw but none there...How are you tapping it off? There is very little room to work with a hammer and punch. I already tried a slide hammer using a double claw.
