I bought a pressure washer off of craigslist a couple of weeks ago that has a Briggs Quantum 6.0HP engine on it. I knew the engine needed some work done, so today, I changed out the oil...NAAAAAASTYYYY! I took apart the carb and cleaned the crap out of it, it was also disgusting and clogged, and I bought a new air filter for it.

Well at about the second pull, the thing started right up! It runs fine for about 40 seconds and then all of a sudden it just comes to a halt. I can't figure it out and I hope it's not something really bad wrong with it. There are no adjustments whatsoever on the carb.

Any thoughts of things to check? I'm kinda stumped at the moment.

Does it start right back up? Did it seize? Did you forget the oil? :)mad2:)

Yes, I put oil in it. It starts up again when I choke it and then it'll run for about 40 seconds again and then shuts off.

Might sound dumb, but loosen the fuel cap a bit (just enough to leak a little air into the tank) and try it again. Sometimes the vent in the cap clogs and won't let fuel go to the carb after running a bit.

Jerry, I was about to go try that.

Ed, it's a bowl, but there are no adjustments on the carb.

I just got done eating lunch, I was so starving, I think that's the reason I ran out of ideas. :roflol:

OMFG OMFG OMFG!!! It was the stupid gas cap! It's missing a plastic piece inside that lets the tank breathe when it's closed.

I just happened to have a cap that I bought about 7 years ago and never used that is identical to the one on this engine. It works perfectly now! It ran until I shut it down.

Thanks guys!!!

:censored: :censored: ARRRGGGGHHH! I spoke too soon! :mad2: :mad2: :mad2:

Now I have a different issue. The pressure washer will work fine for a bit, but then it will die while I'm using it. It almost sounds like the pressure is too much and it kills the motor. I can only use the washer on the "slow" setting on the throttle. If I turn it up, the governor starts bouncing high to low. I really don't like the fact that there's no adjustments on the carb.

Actually known as 'surging' and is a common problem on emissions carbs. Probably needs good clean out with carb cleaner or (at worst) needs new high speed jet. Visit a small engine repair shop and pick their brains (if any).

Emissions carbs suck.... I have never used a carb that didn't have any adjustments. I didn't see that there was a way to remove the jet. I've never had to remove one. How are they usually removed? I guess I could look that up. :arf:

Well, I'll give it another crack at cleaning it, but that won't happen til next week as I'm leaving town tomorrow.

Oh, and here's a pic of what the oil looked like when I drained it.

Crankcase gumbo...Yummie!!!
Run engine and slowly close choke while it is surging and see if it smooths out. Also, make sure all intake associated gaskets are not leaking and are tight.

Yeah, I did that choke thing and it did make a difference. At one point I adjusted it enough so that it would run smooth and I was able to use it for longer, but it still died.

Put a non emissions carb on it? I hate the EPA, those morons probably dont realize how bad the batteries in their hybrids are for the environment.

Yeah, that's probably the best thing to do. Now I just gotta find something that will fit it. The intake is kinda funky and it uses a rubber gasket ring to seal. It's not a normal looking setup. I'm wondering if one of those Tilly's, HL239's will fit it?

That's normal. I picked up 3 mowers with the same engine (ok, same carburetor, air filter setup, and governor setup as yours), they all had a little O ring seal.

PLEASE, just stay away from Long Island. It's bad enough with the Hollywood types that are already here.

Give me model numbers, engine/carb. I may have something, or some ideas.

HOLLYWOOD TYPES??? HECK NO, I'M IN NO WAY LIKE THE HOLLYWOOD TYPES!!! I hate those bastards, they get on my nerves. I specially hate all those stupid tabloids about the "stars": "OMG Brittany this and OMG Brad Pitt did that...."

Here's the numbers I got from it: 12H812-2324-D1-01120158

If the engine didn't have a stubby shaft and was 3/4" I could have substituted one of those HF blues I bought :-(
