Quad axle?

im in the beginning stages of a kart project, but i do have the engine i am planning on using, and i wanna plan the entire kart around the engine. its a liquid cooled twin out of an older snomobile, and its reated at aprx. 85 hp/85ft.lbs stock. engine is bored, and now puts out about 100 across the board, and was wondering what kind of axle oan drive system to use to push this monster. has anybody used an ATV axle and wich ones work well? Kind of wanna keep it under 52" hub to hub so i can get an orv sticker (restrictions n my state)

at 85 hp u should be looking more at a buggy
and yes a quad axil is comon in this type of buggy most likely a swing arm stye one but if u can find one then an independant suspension one would be better

can i reckomen u find an entire quad (try and find one without an engine or an engine that is unfixable as it is cheaper) then u can pull all of the suspension off it and use them

so i could jsut weld the front and rear frame sections to my chassis, wich is what i wanted to do. And yes its kinda gonna be a buggy, but built like a 2 seat kart, side by side.

the swing arm on most racing quads detaches, with ease, its just held to the frame by a long bolt and bearings in the actual swing arm. I suggest mounting the swing arm to your own frame, not too difficult. also mounting the whole swing arm also give you the bearing carrier.

All racers use a live axle (no diff) not sure if its the same for farm quads.

most farm quads use diffs
quite a few use a drive shaft which would really piss off a kart maker

You could put a sprocket on the axle drive shaft, mount the motor turned so that the engine drive shaft is facing the driver, or away from the driver, and then run a chain from the tc, cent clutch, or drive gear to the quad drive shaft.

im gonna use a live axle, and i was planning on building a frame around teh original swingarm. im lucky enough to have the entire snomobile to start, with all electronics to boot. so my nexst big question is what kind of gearing should i run? the stock quad, or someting more close ratio being im using the cvt off the sled?

If you're using the sled engine and cvt, gear it to the motor. That's what will be pulling you around and straining (not too much with that much power, though.)

Im lookin to get a polaris quad for a donor, being they run cvts too. That way i should be good with all the gears, and not need too many others

kinda curious, does anybody think a one inch live axle w/keyed hubs would hold up to this engine using a cvt? or would i have to use a splined axle from a quad?

once you dont cheap out on the axle it will hold up fine

yeah after puting some thought into the fact of gear reduction, id be putting a S*** load of torque to the axle, and decided to use a quad axle. Just gonna source a bent frame with all the suspension, and make a custom swingarm, and re-use treh front suspension setup (cut front off frame, weld teh front clip to my frame) that way i dont have to put too much time into suspension geometry....
