Hey motor head, If you go back and read the post with an open mind I NEVER said mounting on the swing arm was the only way . When I said "good luck getting power to the wheels" It was to mean (it is challenging, its a task, that is more work...etc.)in no way did I mean it could not be done that would be quite stupid on my part , all (I think) atvs and motorcycles are done the way you are suggesting. When I said "you guys have it all figured out" I was intentionally being an a**, sorry. The reason being is that that method is not a secret however if you are doing this stuff as I am for a hobby and do not own a machine shop(meaning, I use a bench and 4inch angle grinder,a harbor freight flux core wire welder and not much else) then you tend to eliminate avenues of complexity and added expense I have done it both ways and mounting on the swing arm is by far the easiest method for the novice. I am not sure what Jeepracer427 skill level is or how involved he wanted to get, we never got that far before the assumptions and bickering started. I was simply making a suggestion.

Okay, I think the air is sufficiently cleared. Since we don't know what Jeep can and cannot do, we present him with the options and the pros and cons of each, and let him decide on his best avenue of approach, yes?
Incidentally, most of us don't have fancy equipment, or a budget for same. Me? Drill press, cordless drill, 4 1/2" angle grinder, Lincoln lunchbox. Not a lot else, and I would imagine most of is are about the same. I certainly would have much cooler karts and buggies if I had the high-zoot tools and skills to go with them. Such is life.

Ok got it now. the 2 grey discs would be the snowmobile clutch and the black box would be the motor. i had to use paint because i couldnt get the photos off my phone but thats exactly what i have minus the motor bracket and swingarm on it.

Right. So to pull it off, you have to make sure your jackshaft sprocket is exactly in line with your swingarm pivots. I have seen this accomplished by using the jackshaft AS the pivot. As an example-> Mount the jackshaft at the back of your frame, with nothing in it's way, and make it long enough to span the full width of the frame. Support it in place with pillow block bearings. Now- Mount pillow block bearings to the swingarm, and hang the whole thing off your jackshaft. Attach springs accordingly. What this does, is makes dang sure your sprocket is dead-on in line with the swingarm pivots, and the chain tension does not change one iota with the cycling of the suspension.
This may or may not be the best way to do it, but it is a very functional way. It would require a beefier jackshaft. Most of us tend to use 3/4", I'd suggest 1"+ if you're going to hang a swingarm off it. There's a few other key points involved too, but no sense going there unless you're going to do it.

ok i see what your saying but would you put bearings in the swingarm and have the sprocket mounted next to the swingarm?

Hey jeepracer here is a link for a dertdevil spoken of in an earlier post it isn't real clear but you should be able to get an idea of how to use the jack-shaft as the pivot. Hope it helps
