This is the problem with my 49cc engine pull start. If I tighten the bolt all the way down, the mechanism will not recoil once pulled out, too much friction/pressure. If I keep it a little looser then the mechanism can spin it which eventually allows the spring to slip. Does anyone know how to repair, or should I just replace?

if its like other 4 stroke industrial engine recoils, you could:

try winding the rope tighter so there is more tension in the recoil spring

grease below where the bolt/bolt spring are to alleviate the friction

locktite the bolt tp keep it from spinning?

fantastic posts, thank you, I'll get the picture of the front of it up tonight, I did try the thread lock but to have the bolt at that "height" few threads engage the nut inside, I'll try the grease and tension tonight too

Better get a back up pull start! I have broken countless numbers of them. 2 of them broke after 2-3 days of use. I even got a metal one instead of the plastic & the **** thing broke. Cheap Chinese crap...

ugh!

Just when I think its smooth sailing I go to start the engine and the pull cord gets stuck. I fix then it happens again. I realized that if I pull too far (the limit of the cord) the spring jumps out of the grooves. Is this thing toast? Do I simply need to not pull so far out? In the first picture you can see where the outer spring hook has jumped out of place.

Toast. For some reason once the springs start popping out like that, they keep doing it. It gets old real fast when you have to keep taking them apart & fixing them.

I've actually had good luck buying chinese items off of Ebay. So long as the shipping/processing time listed isn't noted in yellow or red it's rare for it to take more than 1.5ish weeks. And I'm on the east coast, I imagine west would be faster. It's when I buy chinese items from chinese vendors that it takes so long I have no idea what the package is when I get it.

Holy crap the pull start showed up fast, only problem is, its not engaging the "cup". It appears to have the same "depth" as the original. Any ideas why it's not engaging?

If you didn't get the complete assembly , your going to need the part pictured below. I ran into the same thing on mine thought I would use the old part, and it wouldn't work put the new one in and it worked perfect and is still working. JMO

This part is what I'm talking about. Someone might say different but I have been there, it worked for me anyway.
