Hey guys, been reading your forum and you all seem to know a 'little' about karting ;P

I am making a kart for a school project (by myself), I intend to weld (have equipment and some one to show me).

I have got hold of an old, but working ride on lawn mower

I wish to use as much of it as possible in making my kart, I know the engine is vertical shaft, which is not ideal (11hp honda)... but from what I can tell it is still doable.

If you could, can you please give me some pointers on the thickness/size of steel tubing I would have to use? and other key parts (ie disk brake, clutch, sprocket).

Completely a first thing for me - so thanks in advance, oh and budget, I can spend £170, but ideally a lot less

Are you planning to make a kart out of the riding mower? If so do research on the individuals that do racing with old modified mowers, they switch out the rear axle, know very much about gearings and if you find a site which specifies track rules you can find out more than you'd ever want to know about what parts they used.

dont just look through the go kart section of this forun, also look in Photo Gallery & Project Log and others I know you will find alot of info here. I got asked a few weeks ago from one of my youtubers if I knew anything about these type of set-ups ( I dont ) so I told him about this forum. It seems to be a pritty populer thing to do.

Ok thanks a lot guys! Just to clarify I am not trying to enter competitions or anything with it (and I want to make a new chassis, not use the mowers), just make it move for a bit of fun and so I can analyse the project a bit more

Honestly you can just take and change out the pulley on the back and the clutch pulley to change the gearing and your set. That mower should haul depending on what exactly your pulley sizes are. Beyond that, your frame and other things are pretty self explanatory and you will be able to recycle about 80% of that thing depending on if you need to replace something or what ever.
