Hey everyone! I figured I would make a thread to show our progress on our GSX-R 600cc Kart build. We picked up a 2001 GSX-R 600 motor from a friend of ours for free. One of the pistons had a hole in it and the whole cylider head needs to be replaced, but parts have been ordered from Ebay for cheap! We picked up a kart last week which we got for only $150. The motor had not been ran in a year and the kart had been left to sit in her backyard but its a amazing kart. We have pulled basically everything we are not going to be using which includes but not limited to:
- Honda 450cc Engine (Sold for $100)
- Seats and Seat Belts (Sold for $25)
- Rear Suspension
- Axel Sprocket (Changing for GSX-R 600 Sprocket)
- Steering Wheel

As it sits now it is a rolling chassis. Our plans for it now are to run brake lines to the front disc brakes which will be run off a pedal and run a cable to our rear disc brake which will be run off a hand brake. We also hope to pick up some rear oil filled shocks for the kart. We are hoping to weld another bracket for the shocks so we can adjust the kart for street and offroad use. Once the parts for the motor come in we will build the motor and begin fab work for some motor mounts. Sheet metal will hopefully cover the roof, sides, and undercarage of the kart. We purchased some 3A Racing seats off our local craigslist for $75 and the fit in the kart perfectely! We have lots of plans for the kart and can't wait to show everyone!

Here are a few pictures we have taken in the past few days of our progress. Enjoy!

That's going to be quite the beast! I question your braking plans, though. Would it not make more sense to have the rears on the pedal, and the front on a handle? A driver's natural inclination is to brake with the foot, and if you do that, you're looking at locking the fronts (major understeer), and to actuate the rears, you have to have a hand free. Food for thought.

u may have a magor problem with the chain tension

do u run the chain forward to the pivot point then back to the sproket?

nice looking kart though
its good to see someone putting a bike engine in something that can handle it even if u are tripleing the cc's

if i was u id think about redoing the cage and floor rails as it is a very light framed cart

im doing a similar thing with an 07 model (search piranha build in australia)

itll be intresting to watch this
we could learn off each other
iv nearly got the engine in and have good plans for a brake bias sytem but
did u get the engine from the bike or did u just get the engine
i never saw the engine in the bike so i dont know how the electric system runs or how they ran the cooling system

As far as braking goes we may run a new brake setup in the rear which will run of the pedal but as it is now it works fine and understeer is not really a problem considering the kart will be driven offroad on a local "rally track" :p

The motor we got came from a friend of mine who had it on his bike but the valve opened up and let something into the valve bucket cause the valve rod to shoot into the piston. We ordered a whole new set of pistons off Ebay for $17, a new head for around $50 shipped, and the wiring harness and CDI will be picked up locally.

To answer your question about cooling and wiring. For cooling basically you will need to run a radiator somewhere will it will get airflow, fill it with liquid, and run lines from the engine and back to the engine. It would be wise if you downloaded the motor manual for your year motor online. Now with wiring you may run into some issues. You need a wiring harness and CDI for your year motor. The problem with buying used is that you dont know if the hiring harness is working as a whole meaning some things may work but others may not. You will also need a power comander to tune the CDI which is relatively cheap and you can get premade tunes from my knowledge. Hope this helped!

*UPDATE* The car is in transit from one friends house to another since he will be out of town for a weeks or so + the garage we are moving to has AC and in the hot Houston heat we need all the AC we can get. We finally managed to pick up a angle grinder so we can start working on the rear of the kart. I will hopefully update everyone later today or tomorrow!

i know how to run a cooling system
i put them in dump trucks regulaly but what are u doing about needing two more connections on the rad for the oil cooler

iv got a suzuki swift rad with is the same as a civic rad (they are pretty comon but the suzi was free)

also i have the wiring haness and all components to go with it but i need to find with wires go where
i know what u are saying about buying second hand elecrics it is very risky but im assured it all works, if it doesnt i can send it back and he'll give us a working one

lastly understeer will be worse off road

as someone who lives out in wop wop i can tell u from experiance that when driving on gravel u NEVER turn will braking hard as u are pretty well garunteed to end up in the gutter
