Project for university

Hi all!
I have to submit a project this friday for the university, and it consists in the design of a car (actually a kart), and later I have to build it, so I thought htat a electric kart could be plausible.
The first thing is that I'm n00b in the world of electric karts (but I have knowledge about electronics), so the first issue is that I don't know the specs of the motor I should use (kart will weight 120 Kg-264 pounds).

Is that weight with or without the driver? Batteries? Motor? Either way, that is a lot of weight to push around. I think your options will be limited to what you can find more so than suggestions. Unless you have a bottomless budget of course. You could likely get a gas motor and TC for the price of a decent motor controller for a kart of that size.

Not sure where you are located but if its anywhere like where I am, its next to impossible to find an electric motor that size laying around and with it being a university project, you are going to have deadlines which would make sourcing a part like that difficult.

Unless there is a specific reason for it to be electric, I'd just save the time and money and go with gas. More information on the build would give a better idea of the requirements though.

That weight would be only chasis, with all parts (wheels, axles etc) should be 350 lbs - 160 Kg and the driver wheights 60 kg - 132 lbs.
Or you can just say me the calculation table with Hp/Watts or something like that.
I hope to make done the project ^^

Something of that size will need a 9-13hp engine...

What makes the chassis so heavy?

Oh & please fill in your profile so we have an idea of your location, it makes recommendations a bit easier for us

I want to do the chasis as safe as possible.
I read in a post that a starter motor can be used.

A chassis can be made 102% safe without weighing a ton, it all depends on what material you use

probably ok for a little kid or if you use a big truck one, note that starter motors are not made for continuous duty, run them all the time and you might overheat the commutator and throw the solder of the armature windings
