I just installed a solid axle yesterday and now the steering is a bit difficult. If I cut the wheels in either direction, the cart wants to push straight. I didn't have this issue when I had an open diff in the back. Any help would be appreciated.

thats because there is now drag on the inside rear wheel.

Have you used camber, caster, KPI and ackerman in your steering configuration? Pics?

The steering is stock. Here are some pics.

And just for giggles, here is the new rack and fenders I made.

Yeah, basically, live axles do that.

So...

  1. What surface do you ride on? High grip or low grip?
  2. Are your back wheels much bigger than your front?
  3. Is the front of your kart partiularly light?
  4. Do you have all the correct steering geometries? (as mentioned above)

Those are the main things that will contribute to a poor steering live axle kart.

Is that with 1 or 2 in it? Try adding some weight to the front and try it, I think you have a front to rear weight problem.

That was with 2 of us in it. I'm 260lbs and my son is over 100lbs. The terrain was on grass. The rear tires are much bigger and yes the front is much lighter than the front.

its not turning because with live axle both wheels spin at the same speed, but with diff it lets the wheels spin at different speeds obviously. so you need to gain traction with your front wheels and lose traction with the rear wheels. shifter kart chassis are designed to lift one rear wheel up when they turn. thats why it is hard to turn. so do whats said above and see if that helps.

it doesnt look like your steering arms on the knuckles are pointed correctly. it will help if you properly set up your ackermann angle. it shouldnt be too hard to fix in on yours because your steering arms are already pointed backwards.
