The run down
Kohler Model CV740S
725cc/27Hp
Hydraulic lifters
Pressurized oil system
CDI ignition
Vertical 1" shaft

I'm considering flipping it 90° and building something I probably shouldn't around it.

Being pressurized instead of a splash lubricated leads me to think it would be less likely to blow up than something like a Briggs push mower flathead.

The main thing that has me hesitant is I know exactly how expensive Genuine Kohler parts are, which means even stripped down and parted out I could potentially make a small chunk of change

Maybe less prone to blowing up, maybe not. Gotta say that oil slinger/dipper makes a nice fine mist of oil everywhere inside. Tons of similar engines that are built for high revs but still run a dipper with no issues.

I say DOIT!

Well I know the consequences of flipping a dipper is you have to run a bit less oil to prevent it from foaming it up which reduces the lubricating capacity.

I tore the Kohler down to inspect all the internals due to it having sat out for years. Best I can figure it was parked because rodents and incompetence screwed up the wiring (the entire tach section of the harness is missing plug and all. Both bores have a very prominent cross hatch bordering on aggressive so I'm sure it was overhauled shortly before abandonment because I've never seen a factory hone so noticeable even with 0hrs clocked

Junked it. Too much fried electrical to be cost effective, pretty much everything I could bench test was fried. Even many of the magnets for charging had let go and became a shattered collection of debris wadded up to one side.
