Primers

Does anyone have any experience painting car bodies? What primers to use and when and what brands? Not the rattle can type but the real ones

When I built and painted my ice fish house frame in high school, I used Dupli-Color auto paint primer from NAPA auto in the 1qt or whatever size the cans were. Used lacquer thinner to clean oils off the steel and used a HVLP paint gun to paint it. $29.99 or so per can.

Okay, because I might be purchasing a 59 f100 and it would need to be repainted and so that means completely stripping it down to bare metal, fixing dents and welding in patches. I think that by now I know I need to use either a 2k primer or an epoxy primer,

But I also don’t know if the plain 2k primer will be a sealant first the metal since primers can let in moisture. I want the paint job to look semi professional at least, certainly better than the cheapo MAACO ones lol. That’s a joke

I’d be using a hvlp gun also, and some of y’all may think it is dumb to be asking this before even purchasing but I want to see how costs add up and consider all of my options

I made my living building show cars for a few years, I still do some crash repair, and I swear by evercoat featherfill. If you go with it get the 4:1 hardner as it takes the guesswork out of reducing it for spraying.
Good build, it adheres to bare metal and filler, it doesn’t shrink, and you can put a good film thickness on it and block it to perfect your bodywork.
I call it bodyman in a can.

Okay, does the feather fill also work as a sealer? Or is another sealer needed

It’s a good practice to seal before paint regardless of what primer you’re using. It uses less paint that way, and provides a more uniform surface.
I’m actually repairing a front end collision on a 16 fusion at work right now.

Okay so sealer and then a primer? I’m very confused as I’m all new at this

I usually do primer over bare metal and sealer before I paint

Okay thanks for the help. If there are any other products aside from body filler please let me know so I can take them into consideration for a budget
