Multiple ways. A coating of grease will keep rust at bay but you'll get dirt sticking to it. Theres some sort of gel that Ive seen that you melt and brush on, the result is fairly hard and invisible. Ill see if I can find a link.

silcone spray is good as well

doesnt hold dirt but keeps rust off

I usually spray a bit of wd40 on my kart axle every couple of rides.
