Ok so im looking for an exhaust for the predator (im doing a mini bike kit build) and i want the nice sound of an exhaust, but not as loud as a header. What are my options?
EDIT: Also not looking to spend much, because i could make a header for free but its just too loud.
Not sure your definition of 'nice sound'... but if you are looking for a 'less sounding like a lawnmower' sound, that wont audibly rip threw ones ears (
much quieter) and a more closer to a 'Harley' sound/tone... this is what Ive done on about 3 mini bikes and will be doing for a
new build of mine...
Get one of these... Universal B&S cigar muffler...
usually 5$-10$ at a local lawn mower store.
After you get the muffler, take it into HDepot/Lowes and get a properly threaded nut to afix to it,
in the plumbing section. I wouldnt get the galvanized one... youll have to grind/sand/wire-wheel the galvanize off, before welding to the end of the header... bout 2$-4$ if I remember right.
Just doing this will alleviate ALOT of the volume of the exhaust.
Next, for the 'tone'... goto your local auto store (
auto zone/advance auto/princess auto/pep boys/etc) and buy an
exhaust tip, that will '
just' slide over the cigar muffler... (
the longer the tip, the lower/deeper the tone). The diameter of the hole that the exhaust comes out of, past the muffler, (
ei- the tip end opening) will determine the volume. An end opening
larger than the opening off the head will act like a megaphone for whatever comes out of the cigar muffler. Ive found tack welding a washer-like item, w/ the appropriate sized opening, into the exhaust tips, end opening, to bottle-neck all air through its hole, reduces the 'trumpeting' of sound volume, past the muffler, yet keeps the desired tone... hope that makes sense (
pretty sure I used the correct wording/names... im SURE someone will interject their .02 cent (confederate/rebel opinion) if I did). I
strongly advise against the '
ricer' tips, in hopes of the 'ricer' sound... it really doesnt work for
this application...
ive tried.
Making your custom header
alil wider diameter pipe will audibly result in a more throatier/raspier sound (
like removing the CAT from a cars exhaust system). Cut the end, of the header, at the angle desired for muffler/tip to project towards... weld nut to header end... screw on muffler and
tack weld the exhaust tip on.
If dual mufflers are done, then the
mechanical result will be
half the back pressure of 1 muffler...
but ensure both ends of the 'Y' off are the same length or the mechanical result is the same as having 1, due to the pressure is released prior reaching the 2nd muffler (
all mufflers create back pressure... some more than others).
