Trying to put my motor together, have a clutch that fits on the shaft with set screw. Question is do I allow the clutch to go all the way to the back, almost touching cover? Or would it go towards the front of crankshaft and install washer and bolt? Is there a spacer that should be behind this clutch for proper spacing? Also any idea on bolt size for the crank?

I would run it in and run the sprocket inboard (make sure your clutch can grab both ways) ie: sprocket inboard or outboard. This will put the least amount of stress on the crank bearings. So mine goes - engine side cover:washer:clutch:spacer:washer/bolt.

I think I have one 3/4" washer between the clutch and engine. Plus a 2 washers between the clutch and retaining bolt.

So long as nothing rubs/makes contact w/ moving parts, everything should be ok. The important issue to deal w/ is sprocket alignment, for the chain. Ensure the end bolt is installed securely... add couple drops of Locktite blue or red on the threads to prevent possible loosening. Spacers/washers 'can' be used to shim for a gap.

Go for blue, red needs a good amount of heat to loosen.
The clutch looks like(in the last pic) it's just contacting the shoulder on the shaft.
If anything run the sprocket inboard.

I see a couple of replies here advocating running the sprocket inboard.....not gonna say that's bad advice....but most karts are set up to run the other way.....so axle sprocket location and engine mounting location is the determining factor there.....

Probably the main reason karts are set up that way is that to change anything....you have to completely remove the clutch or engine....while the other way....you can simply move the engine to remove the chain....

And.....yes...before you say anything...(you know who you are)....not everyone uses or believes in master links.....
