predator 212 tank vent

My mini bike project sat for two years. Now I've got to get back up to speed.
That gas tank has a plastic hose connection on top. The manual says it's a check valve. It's just a vent for the tank isn't it? Or is there a return line from the carb.

Last time I sucked on my gas tank, I don't think it checked anything.
I was checking to see if it was a check valve. I think mine was just a vent.

Based on the burning in my throat, I think it allows gasses in and out of the tank.
However, the liquid gas didn't seem to spill out of it?
