And once again you all are on the money I pulled the torque converter and low and behold somehow the springs allowed the inner piece to come apart enough for the “guide rods” to fully come out of their holes thus making it stick open
When inspecting those “garter” springs, if you take the thing apart… they would lay straight.

If they look curved or bent when relaxed, it might be worth replacing them.

I see you have a genuine Comet, so I’m wondering how old it is and how much abuse it has seen.

I trust GPS put together a decent maintenance video.

Thank you for the input! I think the issue occurred pretty recently due to the fact when I disassembled it earlier The “garter” springs immediately sat in their respective grooves without any Kinks, twists, or deformities. As soon as I slid those springs out it basically fell back together and from my research and everything posted here it seems to be in good working condition. not near as worn out as I was imagining it would be
