Predator 212 limp mode

I installed a new predator 212 basically stock except for a straight pipe, i can run it full throttle for a short bit and then it goes into like a limp mode where it will only run about 1/2 throttle, after it sits a bit it will run full throttle again, what can cause this?

could be....no vent in the gas cap ( creating a fuel vacuum)..... over heating it ( no fan on the flywheel) or you took off some of the shrouds, or running way too lean. Really is no such thing as "limp mode" on a small engine because it aint got no computer electronics.

its a stock cap, shouldn't it be vented good enough? also i did install a torque converter, no shroud on it right now, would that matter?

nope, as long as you keep your fingers away from it !

Sounds like the engine is overheating and seizing up. I guess that’s why they tell you no high speed under heavy load for long durations. Have you changed the oil?

i thought heat too but wasn't run for very long, have not changed the oil but pulled dip stick and looks brand new.

If it’s running a little leaner because of the pipe it very may well be overheating.

Could also have a badly restricted fuel filter, so carb bowl eventually runs out.
If any little extraneous-looking pieces of metal around the crankcase of the engine have been removed, even a piece 1" x 4", it will run hotter........................

took off some of the shrouds,

.......................Even those help to funnel air from the fan around the body of the engine to cool it. Study a picture of a 212 for comparison.

Engine shroud or torque converter? If engine you awnsered it right here. Put the shround back on if you expect any life out of that engine. That and you put a better flowing exhaust on something tuned for a restrictive exhaust. If you want it to run decent go get a better intake setup and a propper jet.

I missed the no shroud part. Good catch! Of course put the shroud back on! It’s like trying to run a car without a radiator!

great point, i got a predator out of the box threw it on and thought it was faulty till i started looking around and was curious and unplugged it

no, it has been removed
