I'm looking to buy one of the 13hp/420cc Predator engines from Harbor Freight, but they have three separate item #'s listed on their website. I called HF tech support and they stated that they are all identical except that they come from different suppliers/vendors.

I'm assuming that I shouldn't go with the California-compliant model (Item #69736) as it may not have the performance of the other two due to emission restrictions.

Anyone have any comments on which of these other two has the best performance?

Item #60340

Item #60349 (The picture of this one does look slightly different - any idea why?)

Here's the California-compliant model:

It appears to be the same thing, by the numbers..... (bore, stroke, power output....) the only difference I see is the gas tank and filter on one is a little fancier.....

:smiley_omg: I didn't even notice that, I have no idea...

My best guess, without a better view, would be it's some kind of filter connected in the hose between the valve cover & the carb

I don't have a clue either, but I wonder if it could be a fuel guage sending unit?

Ah- I clicked on the link and got a better picture-I believe it's an electric fuel pump. It has 2 hoses-one of which goes to the gas tank and I would guess the other to the carb. It has a positive and negative blade on the side.

That would be excellent if that is the case - I might relocate the fuel tank so gravity feeding would no longer be an option. Still, I wonder why a fuel pump would be necessary on an unmodified engine since the fuel tank is on top.

Might be an auxiliary pump in-case to relocate fuel source.
edit: I looked at the manual, no mention of what that might be.
I now think it is just a breather filter for the tank and the valve cover.

I think you might be right. I tried to Google up some information on fuel pumps last night and didn't have much success. I got a bad download on the manual and didn't get a complete parts breakdown diagram but there was a fuel vapour collection unit in the parts list. I still don't know but I'm curious as heck.

:wai: On item number 60349, if you double click on the picture and look close at the box with two hoses. On the left side it looks like there are clips and a filter inside, some kind of vapor recovery system, I am guessing that the line coming out of top on the gas tank goes to that box and the other line goes to the carb. Kinda like the charcoal filters used on cars/trucks. Definitely not a fuel pump, as the feed line from the tank goes directly to the carb.

So its just an EPA thing?

Yep- last I checked, there was a California version with a bit of extra treehugger crap on it. Fair bet that's what you're looking at. The fuel tank must be vented to atmospheric pressure, and heaven forbid it's actually vented to the atmosphere.

Weird, because in the product description for that specific one it states:

"Item for sale outside California only – please refer to item for California compliant model."

In other words, that isn't the California-compliant model.

It could be a fuel pump, and the extra hose is fuel return.

:wai: That is not a fuel pump, as the fuel hose is coming out of the tank directly to the carb. Another question, why would you need a fuel pump on a gravity fed system? That box is some kind of EPA/CARB vapor system.
