So the answer is yes......I have planted them both ways.....I would think it would be better without mechanically.....and better with by hand.....

Mechanically, you might break them off....(probably will)... so....the energy the potato has put in to growing that will have to start over.....and there's a chance that eye may not grow another sprout.....

By hand.....the potatoes have a head start....and you know they are going to sprout!

Well.....actually....they aren't.....so....here are some generalizations: the closer to the Equator.....the warmer....the closer to the poles....the cooler.....the higher the elevation the cooler....the lower....the warmer....

Anyway.......looking at a World map......you'll see that Croatia is about as far above the Equator as the center of the United States....so it stands to reason....that....while the timing may be different....the general climate should be very similar.....

for sure, geographic width is important but it's much locally microclimatic related ...
for example, my village is in small valley and there is temperature inversions, so is cooler on lover height then in hill.
so our planting season for potatoes is from march 19 to april 4 . and other villages around as will do all planting from marc 1 to march 15 ..

and there is so much superstition here...

march 19 is St. joseph day, april 4 is "quatnto duranto" which means weather on that day will be kept for next 40 days so on both of these two days there is no planting ...

also no planting on full moon and lunation (end of moon cycle )...

well, at least in theory..

and, english is not my born language, so I use translator for unknown words but it is not correct 100 % ...

I am more familiar with IT , mechanical and maritime dictionary ..

So.....what I was really getting at....(with generalizations) ....is that you cant grow coconuts on the North Pole.....but with some variation...we should be able to grow the same things.....

finally, had some time ...

mostly done, just some fine tuning ( ) and those red plates for covering potatoes.
but, there is few problems...

first, this square profile for hooking cups should be 25 mm (outer ) and I have 20 mm and 30 mm, so cups hanging when going down (last picture) and also wobbling around so I can not make hole on bottom of container so precise...

and that cause another problem, couple potatoes go inside hole beneath plate and coming cup pull everything up (potatoes and plates, or cut potatoes and this pipe (4th pict from bottom) is to wide...

also, hanging cups allow potato to miss next cup and on the bottom cup there is 2 o3 potatoes wich fell together on the ground...

Hmm... maybe gravity fed would be something to look into... kinda like a cross between a fertilizer spreader and a gumball machine.

I think you just have one or more small tweaks and then you can probably patent the thing.
