Well I'm on build 2 now. I may not have made it clear but I have about 3 go kart projects. First build is the vertical shaft mower engine build. Thanks to this site, that project is well on its way.I'm just sick of the lame oil' Riggs and Stratton 5 horse engines. Anyway, I have 1 frame left with no power plant and I'm seriously thinking of a gy6 build. How hard/common is it to put on a frame it doesnt belong to? I know I can physically get it to fit. I'm just curious about the battery recharch wires and what not. They have fancy plugs and all that. Would I just be able to cut the plugs off and run them differently? And I'm a super newb on this whole cdi thing. Is it necessary? And what exactly does it do.

CDI is short for Capacitor discharge ignition. For a bit more info, have a look at this.

Where most engines rely on an ignition coil & some type of breaker system to create a spark, a CDI system uses the CDI module to create the pulse & the coil is merely a transformer, rather than the spark source...

With proper mountings, there's no reason you can't use a GY6 on anything; the Chinese don't seem to have any problems...

All the electrical plugs are specific to the various parts used (CDI, rectifier, charging loom, etc) & are mostly universal across the range which determine exactly which parts are needed to make the system work effectively...

Thanks for the link. Good info. My question otherwise was specifically related to the recharge lines. I was wondering if I could cut the plug off and run the lines to the battery without getting the "proper" female plug? I've done it with
Lawn mowers so I figured there would be little difference. I'm interested in the gy6 due to the fact that they seem to have unlimited aftermarket potential that I can actually find. Unlike the 5 horse I have. When I do find parts they're overpriced.

The charging system will be similar to a lawnmower. The GY6 engine will have a stator and a rectifier. Here is a wiring diagram for you. If possibly get the wiring harness with the engine.

Honda clones have a huge aftermarket parts catalogue...

Have you considered a Lifan 125? Tons of parts out there for them, decent horsepower and torque.

Man, you guys are on the ball. I've been to car forums less active than this. I was looking at this site.

http://www.motopartsmax.com/index.php/main_page/index/cPath/21_88

And it looks like if it doesn't come with the harness they have it separate.

We are not a very active site, and you usually have to wait for some good answers, but they do usually come

I had a look at the first engine in that link, and they say:

This engine assembly comes with Intake Pipe, Drive Sprocket, Sprocket cover & Spark Plug, but doesn't come with Carburetor, Battery, CDI, Voltage Regulator, Ignition Coil etc.

To ensure smooth operation, we recommend customers replacing following parts together with the old engine: Carburetor, Battery, CDI, Voltage Regulator, Ignition Coil, Starter Relay, Air Filter, Gas Tank, Main Wire Harness Assembly, Switch Assembly, Throttle Cable, etc.

I seen that. Although I just began looking, I haven't found a good place to order them "whole".

Plus more compact and cheaper.

The GY6 is going to add up fast. My suggestion would be to look for a scooter on craigslist that is wrecked or non running. It should have everything you need in one package.

Well were is a good place to get these things? Craislist is pretty much useless in my area for things like this. To be honest I'm not entirely against buying an already made go kart if the price was right. I just like to build.

I have just a frame. I was just wondering where you all buy these lifans or gx clones from.

Oh and do you have a link to those frames BTW? I didn't find any. Maybe I suck at searching.
